Stay at eye level with your child!
Stay at eye level with your child!
Everything is huge for children - including us adults. When talking and explaining, you should make sure that you stay at eye level with your child. So what you say to him is better for him; Moreover, by being able to face you, it can also read from your facial expressions.
Standing in front of a toddler with a raised index finger certainly creates authority. It used to be a popular means of education and intimidation. Modern educational methods work differently. It's about making things understandable to the child - and that is clearly better at eye level.
What does that mean - at eye level?
Getting on the same footing with someone means equaling each other, creating fair conditions. In your child, you can achieve this by getting on your knees and being at about the same height with him. You can now look him in the eye, seek eye contact, and reach out to listen to you and understand you better.
When is the eye level with the child appropriate?
The answer is always. For going up to a height with a child does not mean losing one's authority. But on the contrary. If you take the initiative and go down to the child to get his attention, secure your authority, because your child learns: It is important to you what it thinks and feels, that it listens, and finally, that it is your instructions follows.
Being on an equal footing with the child is a sign of respect that you should give to your child again and again. Because only those who are treated with respect, are able to treat others with respect.
I´m looking forward to your experiences and additions.
