Dad-Chronicals : Children and humor
Children and humor - how it develops, what children understand and when they do not
Children laugh about 20 times more than adults, but they usually find other things funny than their parents. Age and stage of development decide which kind of humor a child can understand at all. The humor a child develops as a later adult is a matter of imitation.
From the first smile to the humorous laughter
At about four to six weeks a child smiles for the first time. However, this smile has little to do with humor, it serves as a welcome and soothing. The laugh attacks caused by parental faxes to the child are not as much humor either. Because they are part of a physical reaction in the diaphragm. The first ideas of what could be humorous develop children at about 12 months. Then they already know what makes the adults laugh and laugh and are always fascinated by their own power. Decisive for the fact that children themselves can be humorous is their ability to recognize contradictions. A sock on the head, but also the spinach thrown on the floor (which actually belongs on the plate or in the mouth) finds it accordingly funny. As the child develops his language, it begins with verbal jokes. As funny they feel everything that is not "normal" for them. This can also lead to the child getting broken over a fat man, because men can not get babies.
Humorous parents make humorous kids
It's a challenge for parents: Firstly, you should help your child develop a healthy sense of humor and not suppress his happiness. On the other hand, children have to learn what is funny and what is against the "good sound". Now laughs a child obviously about said fat man, then diplomacy is announced. The kid's joke should not be ignored or punished, because in his view, the sight is quite funny. The excuse recommends an apology and the indication that the child is learning and experimenting. There is still time for some advice for the kids later on.
Children watch their parents very closely, especially in their first year of life. Since even the world is largely unknown to them, they learn from their parents what they laugh about and do not care about. It is obvious that children with funny parents will probably find a lot to laugh about later on. Anyone who laughs is happier, learns easier and lives healthier overall. This has been proven by various studies. If, in your opinion, your child laughs too little, you should consider yourself thoroughly. How many reasons are there for you to burst into laughter? If there are plenty, then take an example and laugh with your child as often as possible.
Irony and why children do not understand them
Irony is a popular form of adult humor, the increase of which is called sarcasm. For children, this form of communication is difficult to grasp, and what is said and what is said differs, becoming confused and uncertain. Kids do not know the world like adults and need them to tell the truth. For a child irony is often not much more than a transparent lie - and lies are not allowed. A child who is often confronted with irony or even sarcasm will gradually develop mistrust on the one hand and lack of self-confidence on the other. Since it does not recognize irony and can not differentiate the statement, it doubts its own perception - and that is fatal to the child's development.
Humor in education
Who laughs, learns easier and is more cooperative, as many studies have proven. This important aspect of child learning can benefit parents in education. Transfer tasks to your child with a smile and a little age-appropriate joke and also wrap criticism in friendly and even funny words. However, adults must be careful that their child still feels taken seriously and they retain their authority. It's not about making a clown in front of the child. Clear boundaries and rules are important.
I´m looking forward to your experiences and additions.
