Everyone knows better - about dealing with good advice

Pregnant women can sing a song of it. Whether mother, mother-in-law or best friend, everyone has countless good tips and knows best. After the birth, then you have to suffer as a father under the know-it-alls. Diplomacy and a good contact with the gut feeling are now helpful.

Basically, not all tips are bad. Anyone who has raised children has a wealth of experience that you should not underestimate. Only: You decide which tips you like and which are not. And that is often the problem for the tipster. Everyone thinks it's best to know.

When is a tip a good tip?

  • "You have to let the child scream, you just spoil it!"
  • "Babies belong in their own bed right from the beginning!"
  • "My goodness, the little one is not even warm enough!"
  • "The child stifles in the tight sling!"

This little list could be extended endlessly and exemplifies the many good tips with which you and your partner are bombarded, especially in the early days. How long the deliberation lasts depends on your reactions and on the persistence of the person who so casually tosses good advice. It probably never ends completely. Especially men find it hard, because they quickly deny any competence - from the neighbor, the mother-in-law or other mothers in the playground. This can be really annoying and yet: All too easily the tips of experienced mothers should not be put aside, because sometimes you are actually right.

Tips for dealing with the child can be helpful. Good tips are always those that make life easier, and especially your child! The advice to let it scream, therefore leaves out very quickly.

The gut feeling is right - and sometimes the mother-in-law
Mothers and fathers who work intensively with your baby automatically develop a feeling for what is good for the child and what is not. So let your gut feel calm. This is true even if the good tip comes from the mother-in-law or your know-it-all sister. In most cases, common sense is enough to judge its quality. However, you should make sure that your gut feeling is reported and not the desire to finally sleep again one night or to enjoy your wife without a greedy-sucking baby on the chest. Then quite different body regions speak.

If in doubt, just read it!

If you are really not sure whether a tip is good or not, then a good textbook or even an online portal like fatherfreuden.de still helps. Ideally, you can make your own picture based on the facts and make your own decision. And tips do not always have to be followed by behavior. For example, to tell if your baby is too warm, it will tell you it's starting to sweat in the back of your neck. Would you have known that? Maybe that has already told you the annoying girlfriend of your wife and you just did not listen.

How diplomatic do you have to be?

Of course, you know that everyone means well with you, your partner and the baby. The clever tips should make your life easy and also be good for the child. Still, you do not have to swallow all the teachings with a friendly nod. Especially in the first few months, this is not possible anyway, thin as the nerve costume is then, as a rule. So you will eventually say that you now have enough good advice and that you do not want to hear anything anymore. That's fine and you'll be forgiven. After all, experienced mothers know exactly how you feel right now. One thing you should be prepared for: The flood of good tips will most likely not end this way.
