A steemit UI/UX rant, report on my progress here, new steemit memes (steemes!) and a shout out and recommendation for tools to make steemit life easier for us all by steemitizen: @netuososteemCreated with Sketch.

Hey Again, Steemitizens!

We will be covering a lot of important ground in this post, so let's get started!

Here's my 21 day progress report on steemit.

I'm posting this for my archives, and maybe some motivation for others about what is possible here and well, just out of sheer enthusiasm for this incredible, vibrant, warm, homey community we have here.

I'm so glad to be a growing contributor, helper, helpee, and friend to all the lovely folks I am meeting along the way.

Here is my 21 day progress by the numbers:

  • 592 followers | 2220 posts | 615 following

  • Joined Steemit on June 12, 2017

  • A Steemit.Com user for just 21 Days

  • Maybe at most 80-85 hours of sleep, averaging 4 hours per 24.

  • One 12 Cup Coffee maker @ 2-3 pots per 24 hours. Call it 30 cups at 8oz each on avg per day. That's over 600 eight ounce cups of coffee consumed during this period.

  • Voted as an undervalued post multiple times

  • Voted #5 Most Sociable User on the entire network by top level comment count and replies!

  • Helped a fellow steemitizen build a new well during a drought in Sri Lanka

  • Coached dozens of newbies on how to apply steemit etiquette and do post markup, and made graphics for other user's posts and just all kinds of little things I can find to try and be helpful about here and in the various chat systems.

  • Learned SO much from users like @adil's user manual posts and the witnesses I follow and vote for and all of you.

  • Played many challenges and won some!

  • Given away over $100 SBD in various challenges of my own offering!

  • Broken ground on three new exciting steem based applications for the community to be released over the coming months, with the first to market intended to be the completion of http://steemchallenge.com - a game, contest and challenge directory to all the fun there is to be had on steemit, organized and curated, to make winning great again!

BUT

I followed too many people the first week.

Still cleaning that mess up thanks to the crappy UI around here.

This site's completely amateur, developer mentality-centric user interface is terrible in SO many ways.

We will never get mainstream adoption like this.

It's painfully obvious from page zero, that this site is built by developers and steemit.com doesn't have a UI/UX or solid marketing person on board.

Greeting new arrivals on the home page with

"Welcome to the Blockchain!"

is moronically short-sighted!!!

I showed the site to an author friend who wants to publish a book on here.

She's in her 60's and not a nerd in the slightest. Facebook is her expectation.

When we got to the homepage and saw Welcome to the Blockchain, well, we were no longer creating a new user for Grandma, we were off into a two hour conversation about what a block chain even is.

Surely to god, these people at Steemit.com realize that for us to get the masses, they have to start expecting to serve Joe Public and not just Jane LinuxAdmin anymore, right?

RIGHT?

IS THIS MIC ON?

But anyway, I digress into a much bigger can of crappy interface, amateur hour worms there.

So, back to speaking of cleaning up users, and watching people work!

I must extend my gratitude to @netuoso for creating a custom tool I suggested to him in a comment thread on one of his posts, to make managing followers and followed folks so MUCH easier!

He didn't know me from a donut, but he liked the idea and delivered it in the same day!

Learn more about @netuoso's super cool interface enhancements in this article and his others:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@netuoso/user-script-filter-by-tag-in-steemit-by-netuoso

I highly recommend @netuoso's work and the features he enables for us across the steemit.com web application interface.

Note: These awesome @netuoso designed features require installing a 100% safe extension in your Chrome browser where you place his scripts to affect the site when displayed in your browser, this is totally safe and secure.

Once you have them, you won't be able to live without them!

Remember folks, get out there and get to know each other. As the meeting by chance in comments on a post of @netuoso and I illustrates, many good things can come of it!

Teemwork Makes The Steem Dreem Work!

And just like that, this post is over!

Full Steem Ahead, Steemitizens!

Congratulations on all your success; you lost me some on all the techy talk, but I love your writing style. Keeps me engaged the entire time! Have you invested your personal $$ into this site or was all of it generate here?

I appreciate that!

Dull Fishclosure: I deposited around 550 USD in various amts at various times, however I have also spent, given away and withdrawn about the same, so - what you see is more or less, earnings from 23 days.

Helped a fellow steemitizen build a new well during a drought in Sri Lanka

This one appealed constructed in the context of this list to be honest :D

This site's completely amateur, developer mentality-centric user interface is terrible in SO many ways.

I leaned back, satisfied by these words.
As a developer I totally agree to this quote.

Well but I wouldn't ever raise the word by myself as I know I can't put enough effort in this platform to really contribute. It would be just destructive. Good to see that you can put some time in it! Looking forward to follow your journey.

Thanks, I'll carry the torch for usability every day! I am keen on this community growing and thriving, but we've all got some work to do growing it up, first.

You kinda lost me on this remark, I'm terribly sorry to admit:
"This one appealed constructed in the context of this list to be honest :D"

Does this mean it sounded contrived? Or it appealed to you. My apologies for 600 ounces of confusion....

Haha wasn't really serious about that. I wrote "appealed" instead of "appeared".
I just had to smile when I read that because it looked funny in the context.

Sorry, I miss my point in english sometimes. I have no doubt you really did that :)

Well, it happened shortly after I got here and my first deposit had cleared into liquid steem. A gentleman I read appealed to the community about severe droughts in his land. Im in the USA, he is in Sri Lanka. He needed $150 USD equivalent to replace his dried up well with a new one for his family to survive. In his humble appeal, there was so much sincerity and photo documentation that it was clear he was in need. Whale Stellebelle dropped $75 on him and I simultaneously sent $50, not yet understanding in STEEM to USD she had already sent the whole amount he needed.

A day or two later, he returned the $50 to me quite unexpectedly, thanked me, explained she had given enough and his goal was met, and he put up a post of photos showing construction and operation of the new well.

So I was keeping the post from becoming story time, but that, as they say, is the rest of the story.

You could say because he sent it back, I didn't help, and to your point I almost left this item off the list, a little too boisterous even in THAT LISTS boisterous context. But... it so illustrated how this place can work, I decided to leave it in. A little hyperbole perhaps, but it illustrates the point. Every other statistic on the list is portrayed 100% accurately.

What a damn cool story. I read a few stories like this here on steemit and basically these made sign up a few weeks ago.

Well I would never say you didn't help. You did as you offered help.

Keep up your good work and thank you for sharing this story, didn't read about that one! Would love to see the link if you got it?

you're welcome...happy to help where I can

~smiles fer miles~

Definitely thank you!!!

a great tool is the search bar...enter a few words

in this instance...well...and Sri Lanka

lol...I will admit I hadn't thought of it till I was a week down in your own well of words...interesting dive just the same

by the way...you missing a lime green tube sock?

Gosh, checks post count at over 2000 comments and posts back in time. Well, I'd link you, but finding something that happened 15-18 days ago would be like miraculous in this DAMN UI/UX!

ARRRRRGH

Haha had some hope you archived it somehow :D

Nah, my posts are all just "blow and go" - not much time to "stop and save" them :D

Thanks for the link - I saw his addons while looking at tampermonkey scripts for steemit, but didn't get to test them yet - I'll check them out.

As well you should, young man, as well you should! :D

hehe - having the ability to insert JS into the mix is really a nice one.. I will think about what I can creatively add to steemit that he hasn't already done (Avoiding the temptation to create a random cat pic button) =)

For your next trick...

<drum roll>

How about a "hide resteems" feature for the blog page?

Dang, he didn't tell me he finished that one too! :D YAY! Thanks to you for the clicky thing and @netuoso for the nifty things!

Made some good points. Devs shouldn't be designing, just coding rofl. Beta forever imo.

I joined steemit 2 weeks ago, convinced 3 "regular" people to join, and had to guide them through the sigh up process, and still have to explain to them how this works to this day.

So yeah, steemit has a long way to go. I guess they're keeping the 'beta' there for a reason. Though this looks more like 'gamma' to me.

Not to mock you, but this is too brilliant not to quote here in context.

guide them through the sigh up process

NAILED IT

Lol!

~smiles~

great work...as per usual

Thank you!

This post has inspired me to make the most of the platform and start developing solid relationships with people! Thanks again @sircork :)

You mean all our other chats didn't stick about your amazing talent for this kind of venue?

Do you even listen, kid? :P

Anyone finding this comment between me and this guy right here, @willy-donz, is in for some good reading, so listen up lovers of visceral creative writing, follow this cat, yo? DOOOO IT. You won't be sorry!

It took some time to sink in. I confined myself in a dark room and meditated on all your words of kindness and wisdom. Now I can finally say I am ready to give it my all. Full steem ahead!!

You know what I like most about that?

You went into a dark room, and look what developed!

FULL Steem ahead, indeed!
