DAY 7 STEEMIT: THE FOREIGN COUNTRY (FOR THOSE GETTING HERE FROM YT)

in #steemit7 years ago

And you are???

This post is a continuation of a series started by @weetreebonsai and continued by @daddykirbs. It is geared towards those arriving on steemit from YouTube, but will contain valuable information for others as well.

Simply put, if you just joined steemit, then you just joined a community. Although you may have been up to all sorts of stuff over on YouTube, there is still a good chance that we may have never heard of you. Even if we are aware of your online presence over on YouTube, how are we supposed to know that you have now "moved into our neighborhood?" Well, I'm here to help you understand how to do just that.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF

One of the first things that you should do upon arriving on steemit is to do an introduction post. Traditionally, this would be a post made in the "introduceyourself" tag, but other tags like "introduce," "introduction," and "introducemyself" are also good choices. Many times people find certain posts based upon which tags were used. Some of the more popular tags can be found here: https://steemit.com/tags

To a certain degree, new arrivals on steemit should see themselves as having the "responsibility" of introducing themselves to the community, and the established members of the community should see themselves as having the "responsibility" of welcoming the new arrivals into the community. With all of the other things that a lot of us have going on, we don't all always make it over to the "introduceyourself" tag to greet the newcomers, but there are a lot of us, so some of us usually show up.

This community "greeting" is often why new steemians get a higher post payout on their intro post than their next few. If this happens to you, don't get discouraged. Good things take time, and all of those little post payouts can add up.

When you are looking to make your introduction post, here's a few things to keep in mind. First, remember that anyone could potentially try to scam us, and you, by reposting some of your work from YouTube and creating a steemit account featuring your name. This could become a problem for both of us. This is why a "verification" of some sort is wise. If you are not anonymous, please consider taking a photo of yourself holding up a dated sheet that states your steemit username. This way people can see that it is really you joining us here on steemit.

If you do not include photos or videos featuring yourself on your YouTube channel, you may want to make a video for YouTube where you mention steemit and your username, and include it in your introduction post. That way you will have verified yourself while still remaining anonymous.

A few other things to potentially include in your introduction post would be some more about you.

  • Who are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • How did you hear about steemit?
  • Are you already familiar with cryptocurrencies?
  • How have you enjoyed your time on YouTube?
  • What type of posts do you plan on making on steemit?

As always, only share the information that you are comfortable with, but those are just a few of my suggestions of things that you could mention. By sharing things like that, you will be giving the steemit community a general "taste" of who you are and a "flavor" of what you bring to the table.

MAKE THE ROUNDS

The introduction post is not the only way to announce your arrival. The reach of that post is limited. Only the people who "happen to see it" will have any idea that you have arrived. This is why it may be important for you to consider "making the rounds."

By "making the rounds" I mean mixing it up with the type of people that you are trying to connect with and reach. If you are a chef or cook on YouTube, for example, you may want to check out the tags like "food," "recipes" or "recipe." This is where you will find "your people." For those of you who are not chefs on YouTube, take a peek here and see what popular tags you are interested in, or the ones that best describe your content.

Each tag can be sorted four ways. The "trending" and "hot" lists will show you some of the recent popular posts in that category, with the "trending" ones being the highest paid ones. This is why the "trending" search is basically considered to be "where the money is." The "new" ones will show you every recent post it that tag in order, starting with the most recent. This may be your best opportunity to interact with the content creators. Since they just published their posts, they may be looking to see who comments on them, and waiting to reply to those responses. Interaction in the comment section is where relationships and friendships first develop. The "promoted" posts in each tag are the ones that someone actually paid to promote.

Much like when you move into a new neighborhood, you won't really know anyone when you get here and no one will really know you. If you look for the posts that others have published in the categories that you plan on posting in, you will start to find your "target audience." If you like the posts that you encounter, give them an upvote. When you upvote a post, I also highly recommend that you leave a real comment as well.

Far too often spammy "follow me" or "upvote me" comments can be found on posts, and no one likes to see that, especially the author. There are times when another author would like to have their posts seen by others, but begging and pasting your link in the reply to their post are never good ideas. Often, when an author finds a real comment that is insightful or actually pertains to their post, they are far more likely to look at what the author who made the comment has put out recently than if the commenter just begs for attention.

People will know that you are new from your lower reputation (the number next to your username) but it may be worth mentioning that you recently joined and came over from YouTube. This could pique their interest.

The main thing to remember is that you should make your way around the "neighborhood" and say hi to some of the people you meet. Those real comments will be like a trail that you left behind, all pointing to your username. Not only does the author of the post that you commented on have a chance to see them, but any other steemian may also happen to see them and become interested in who you are.

HANG IN THERE

If you are coming over from YouTube, then you generally fall into one of two categories. Either you have gotten paid from YouTube for your content or you haven't. Regardless of any "success" that you may or may not have had over there, you have a chance here. In fact, if you have made some money off of the content that you've created for YouTube, then you now have a chance to get paid again for it. I'll cover more about that tomorrow.

If you've never gotten paid from YouTube then prepare to at least earn something for your efforts. Even if you've been paid from YouTube, it probably did not happen when you first started over there. Basically, there is a good chance that you will not make a lot here on steemit right away. If you just popped into our community out of nowhere and start posting, but don't really make it off of your own blog page, it will be even harder for you, which is why I consider my advice above to be crucial for most newcomers.

As with many things in the world, steemit offers no promise or guarantee. What it does offer in a censor-free opportunity. If you like to be free to explore uncensored creativity and the potential of the opportunity to earn something for your content, then you've found the right place. Don't compare yourselves to others around here, just be yourself, learn, apply, and move forward.

I hope that you have found this post to be helpful. Stay tuned as I cover some things about posting on steemit tomorrow.
