Commenting without upvoting - good or bad for Steemit?

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

I Resteemed THIS post yesterday. I've noticed the exact same thing happening lately and I don't like it.

Today, I made a post and it got a few comments (and a few votes, thank you). One of the commenters hasn't upvoted and I called him on it.

'I vote after 30 minutes, that's the rule' was his reply.

Fair enough.

But I did some digging, because I'm curious like that.

Three posts (other steemit members, not mine) that were 2 hours old have not been upvoted on either. If you want to see for yourself, the post is Here

So I went digging a little more.

He's getting upvoted on his comments even when he's not upvoted the post he's commented on - no matter HOW long ago it was.

I'll remove the flags I put on to drop your payment as and when you upvote the posts you've commented on.

I adore this platform. The way it works, the people blogging and especially the people and brains behind the whole thing - they are second-to-none. You are ALL awesome and I get annoyed when people come here trying to take advantage of everything Steemit.

The moral to this story is - Don't try to take advantage of this community. Everything is open, everything can be seen.

I'll get down off my high-horse now and I promise I'll remove the flags if @hebro goes and upvotes ALL those posts.

I hope I've not over-stepped my mark. I do tend to get a little over-protective of things and people I like.

Added by Edit #2 I removed all my flags from @hebro's posts and comments.

That happens to me all the time. Thankfully my posts get alot of comments (sometimes as many as votes) and there have been many times a person commented without voting. It's kind of annoying but it is what it is I guess.

Yeah, it's annoying, and I suppose there's nothing to be done... but I certainly won't favour such comments with an upvote ;)

Yes, that is true, people are more thinking about themselves and just upvoting their comments not the post as upvote value decreases. We have to give honor to who it deserves.

Absolutely!

Personally, if my voting power is dwindling, I go and do other stuff...

Thanks for sharing. Ive only been here under a week so these posts help me understand the steemitsystem.
Cheers.

Hey @strands

I've been here a while and I don't think I've encountered many people that are worth muting (ignore) and I've also found that if you have a question, ask it and someone will have an answer for you.

Good Luck!

I was guilty of commenting without voting after the most recent HF, but I didn't upvote my comment. I wasn't voting because my VP had dropped bellow 10%, so I had to let it build back up. This is becoming an issues as of late though, I have noticed it on my posts as well.

I fully understand that reasoning and I would have accepted that if he had said that, but the excuse he gave was the 30 minutes rule thing. Which is why I checked.

Yea, probably just here for easy money, which those types usually get weeded out early on.

Yep, but I think it's down to us to educate them or call them on it.

Voting power tends to go down really quick after the new HF. Ive had many people comment on my posts without upvoting too but im ok with it since they could be saving their voting power..

I totally understand that. It's a valid reason and not a poor excuse. The only reason I went digging was because he claimed to upvote after 30 minutes and I found that to have been an untruth.

Yea it doesn't make anu sense, like why exactly 30mins, what happens then?

The algorithm used to be that the author of the post received more of your vote rewards the sooner you posted - up to 30 minutes.

@dan explains it better than I can:

There is a linear split between 0 and 100% as time from post goes from 0 to 30 min. If you vote after 5 minutes then you only get 16% of curation reward, the rest goes to the author.

That post was found Here

This is how it used to work Here

I think the way curation rewards are split was not changed.. or was it? Im not sure

I don't know. I've not looked into it - mainly because I don't mind how it works, it just does... :)

Lol yeah I guess. I dont worry too much about curation rewards to be honest, I think commenting is more valuable in allowing you to represent yourslf and your thoughts to the community allowing you to get more followers who respect the way you think and write, support your interests, etc. Rewards are just a bonus.

Absolutely! I do enjoy a good debate and I was torn whether or not to make this post initially, as I didn't want to be seen 'moaning' about it all :)

He should have said that I intend not to vote because of .... than just saying a lie.

I'd rather he said 'My voting power is down but I read and enjoyed your post.'

I tried to upvote as many posts as I could when I joined steemit. Then I realised my voting power dwindled down to 0 and I no longer had enough power to vote. So I held off until it regenerated and I'm voting once again.

Yes it's a problem but you can limit the voting power you use by utilising the slider - not sure if you have one yet...

Thanks for commenting.

You will notice the vote slider when you reach 300 SP.

oh ok. Thank you for letting me know.
It's going to take me a while before I reach 300 haha

No, it won't. You will reach there in no time, just keep steeming on and you'll never notice that you're already there. Just think that all of us except those huge investors had been there.

Ah! I wasn't sure when it kicked in...

Could this be the side effects of HF19? Some (I mean only some) are afraid of draining their VP. Instead of voting it to other authors, they'll just keep it for themselves. I hope I'm wrong, and I apologize if I am.

You could be right with some non-voters but I'm cynical enough to believe there are some that are trying to 'game' the system and it's that behaviour I don't like.

Such a good behavior. If all the people in the community have this kind of heart, not to game the system, what a wonderful place it would be.

Yes... a little like Utopia perhaps? ;)

I hope we have that kind of world :)

I upvote first and then comment. Thanks for the post.

That's how I do it, too :)

Even i am only commenting in the posts & not upvoting for all the posts . I am running out of my VP very soon with new HF. My bot is upvoting to my regular followers.

Yeah, that's a problem. I'm still voting, but using the slider to limit the power of vote I give.

@dommaraju, I am new here. Please tell me about the bot. Is that something that you installed separately to invite your regular followers?

you need to create account in steemvoter.com and add your favorite followers in there with the time limit to vote. I will vote automatically. You need to provide your posting memo there you can find that in the settings/Permissions

@dommaraju, Many thanks for your advice. I shall do accordingly.

Lots of people comment without upvoting, some saying they upvoted without doing it (don't know where they have their heads though as it's right there for everyone to see).

I think for the majority, the upvote left undone is partly due to previous experience where the only real way to support was by commenting (even though you could give likes). Still though, I'm not sure: it's something I've been mulling over. Seems to me that people are still not that aware of just how important upvoting is as a support mechanism on Steemit. I've begun to subtly educate on the subject asking everyone to support by upvoting.

But when someone is gaming the system, that's another issue entirely.

Good post, and thanks for your efforts.

Thank you. That's a good explanation and I may be being a little 'using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut' in my attempts at educating.
