5 Ways To Explain Steemit To Friends And Family

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

When I was new on Steemit I was in the process of discovering the platform. I would have avoided any questions that anyone may have asked about Steemit at the time. I don't think many people knew about Steemit in its first year of existence. But now I have observed, especially online, there are more mentions of Steemit and an increasing curiosity about the site. A few of my friends have asked me about Steemit and now I know the kind of questions that come up when Steemit becomes a topic.

For those who might be new and are not sure about how to introduce Steemit this post will provide you with tips on how to go about it.

First, let us take a look at what is mentioned on Steemit on Wikipedia.

Steemit is a blogging and social networking website on top of the Steem blockchain database. The Steem blockchain produces Steem and Steem Dollars which are tradeable tokens users obtain for posting, discovering, and commenting on interesting content.

Steemit, Inc is a privately held company based in New York City and headquartered in Virginia. The company was founded by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, creator of BitShares.

I think that is a pretty good summary of what Steemit is all about for a Wikipedia definition. But when you are talking to your friends or family members you may need to explain a bit more.

Comparison With Facebook

The whole world knows Facebook so it becomes an excellent way to compare Steemit and explain which site is better. That is really not very difficult. You only have to say that they can do the same thing that they do on Facebook but here they get paid for it!

Getting paid for social posting is like a dream come true for most people. No one minds signing up for a beta site if they will get paid to post.

Blogging

Another site for comparison for the sake of explaining better is Blogger Googles free blogging platform. Many aspiring bloggers use free blogging platforms like Blogger and Wix. On the other hand, experienced bloggers would be familiar with WordPress and know about the nitty gritties of publishing articles.

But what most bloggers don't know is how to monetize their sites effectively. The most popular form of monetization is Adsense which is owned by Google. Adsense pays very low amounts of money to bloggers for displaying their ads, although it depends upon the niche. Moreover, Google is known to shut down accounts at the slightest suspicion of click fraud and sometimes without any reason at all.

This is where all bloggers will appreciate the fact that Steemit pays well for good content, especially if you are an established blogger on Steemit with a following. Of course content is king and the higher the quality of content the higher your chances of getting larger rewards.

WIIFM

Here is a question that will be on top of anyone's mind when you talk about a new site or any idea - what is in it for me? This is also known as the WIIFM proposition for an idea. If you are able to give the correct answer to the question you have sold your new idea.

Answering WIIFM with respect to Steemit can also depend upon what people are looking for. If your friend wants a platform where he can blog about his passion and also find like minded people Steemit could be the ideal place. After all there are topics as diverse as homesteading and business intelligence. Earning money is the best answer that almost everyone would like to hear. But there is much more to Steemit, and you can think of which feature to talk about based on what the need of a person might be.

Stick to the basic utility

There is not much awareness about blockchains and the details about various cryptocurrencies. You will do well to explain Steemit as a place to blog and earn money, and also to network within like minded groups. Once they become a part of Steemit they will gradually understand the rest like smart tokens, witnesses and so much more that makes up Steemit.

How to get paid

Don't forget to explain how they can get paid into their account. Go through the process of how they can change Steem into Bitcoin and then convert it into their local currency using exchanges. Of course they can invest back into Steem and will also have a part of their earnings in Steem Power, a feature that contributes to the stability of the platform.

So you can see how easy it can be to explain about Steemit not just to friends and family but to anyone. Be sure to spread the good word about Steemit wherever you go with these simple tips.

Wish everyone a Happy New Year and have a great 2018!!

I have definitely used the Facebook reference before and that helps!

Great, and yes Facebook is a universal example that you can use to explain Steemit!

Good that you found it useful.

Very good post! I'm very new to steemit and even I don't understand all aspects of the platform yet. I will bookmark this post :)

Be sure to use the tips after reading the post. thanks

I found Steemit because a woman on Facebook said you could earn money for posting on this platform. Out of curiosity, I clicked on her link and read some of the things in the Steemit FAQ section.

To be honest, even after reading some of the FAQ, I was still so confused.

I had no idea what Steem or SDB coins meant. And, I wasn't really familiar with how cryptocurrency worked either.

Months went by before I finally came back to Steemit to actually sign up. So, this post is really helpful and I will make sure to use some of your suggestions here when explaining this platform to people on my email list.
