Fighting DDOS attack using Blockchain technology & how the attack became a blessing in disguise for Steemit

Some 12 days ago, steemit website was not accessible and many steemians were worried not knowing what went wrong... but thanks to @sneak  who confirmed it was due to DDoS attack prompting many steemians to write on same subject including me, see post here However, thanks to the DDoS attack, many steemians are now aware of alternative sites to use whenever we have downtime issues in steemit which are;

These links above are very user friendly and exciting to use. More so the recent DDoS attack opened avenue for great steemians like @lukestokes to bring up suggestions on why we need in steemit an offline Masscot that he suggested in his post titled Steemit needs its own mascott of failure..which triggered a lot of good suggestions and subsequently other steemians like @voronoi to post on shark mascott as inspired by  @intothewild . Great efforts from wonderful steemians.

Therefore, thanks to the DDoS attack, it has opened a new avenue for discussion on how to improve the steemit offline site and also ensuring many steemians learn of the alternative links to keep blogging...

Using Blockchain Technology to fight DDoS attack

According to Cointelegraph, 

Technological innovations with technology from blockchain are popping up all the time. From data services to real estate, these applications are excellent use cases for how Blockchain technology will reshape the face of digital information.

The good news for most of us in steemit is that  according to Inc.com a recent development in Blockchain technology space may be used to put an end to DDoS attacks like the one experienced by steemit about 12 days ago. It should be noted that these DDoS attacks use mass requests to ensure that a website is rendered useless to its users leading to affected site going offline.

However, platform that is decentralized allows users to rent out their bandwidth that can be pooled to give way for very high amounts of data processing which will greatly reduce the risk of DDoS attack being successful. More so,  most of the system currently in use work with centralized servers to try to absorb the huge amount of spam information which can lead to DDos attack. It should be noted that the nature of attacks from DDoS makes the bandwidth that is needed to process this amount of data nearly insurmountable.

More so, According to inc.com:

“By using Blockchain, Gladius which is based in Maryland is creating a system that would allow people to rent out their unused bandwidth, so that it can be used to absorb DDoS traffic that are malicious and mitigate attacks.”

Finally, using a decentralized platform ensures a system whereby bandwidth that are pooled can be accessed and used in far superior ways to single-server centralized models where there is limited bandwidth.

Conclusion: In this post we now know that DDoS attack experienced by steemians some days ago has made the steemit site and community better by making us more knowledgeable on what DDoS is all about and how we can continue steeming hot even during downtimes. Also we should be aware that our investments are secure as the downtime/attack is only on the site and not the database. More so, blockchain technology can be perfect in fighting DDoS attack, therefore, such attacks will soon be a thing of the past in steemit thanks to its decentralized platform.
