The Steem News @ 3 September 2019

in steem •  last month

Steem News is back and catching up after the small break in service.

The Steem blockchain had a short intermission but is now back up and running.

The Delegation Trust has extended its deadline, the Curangel curation project has launched and Sonic Groove are starting a new weekly music contest.

And there is also news from DTube, Steem-Engine, SteemProposals.com, ClickTrackProfit, @theycallmedan and Tasteem.

1. Steem back up and running

Due to a bug in the curations reward curve calculation system the Steem blockchain had to go offline on Sunday.

The bug was especially resistant to detection because the problem was not with the mathematics backing the curation reward curve, but subtleties in the integer based approximation of a square root. The bug was the result of a subtle behavior in the new curation rewards curve that lead to votes being able to have a curation reward weight of -1, which when stored in an unsigned field resulted in a computed value of 2^64 - 1.

When paid out, these votes were attempting to receive trillions in STEEM. This was caught by other assertions which instructed the blockchain to halt block production and prevent the unintended behavior from impacting any reward distribution.

Steem developers released a fix early on 2 September. Witnesses restarted block production just after 6am UTC on Monday. Steemit and the Steemit API services were restored after replays were completed by around midday on 3 September...

The downtime caught the attention of some of the crypto media like CoinTelegraph and CrytoVest...

3. Major new curation project launches

Top 30 witness @pharesim has announced a major new curation initiative @curangel

Curangel was born from the idea to provide an alternative to bid bots or vote automation for stakeholders which are not interested in curating themselves, but don't want to watch inflation eating up their stake either. We engage a motivated team of experienced curators to find undervalued deserving content, and share the received rewards 80/20 between delegators and curators...

4. The Sonic Groove Live Music Contest

Following on from the demise of @luzcypher's long running OpenMic contest The Sonic Groove Tribe is launching a new music contest on the @sonicgroovelive account.

The judges for the weekly competition include @isaria, @krystle, @zipporah, @pechichemena and @joseacabrerav. The sponsors include @ausbitbank and @helpiecake.

Prizes include STEEM, Creative Coin, Sonic Groove and Tunes...

5. DTube reschedules DTC token sale

6. Nitrous adds Ads

Steem-Engine founder @aggroed has announced the arrival of ads for Nitrous, the front end available for tribes using SCOT and Steem Engine tokens.

A key feature of the ads is that 85% of the payment received for the ads is used to purchase and burn tribe tokens. Burning tokens helps to maintain token values...

7. SteemProposals.com proposal to the Steem Proposal System

Short?
I'd really hate to see a long "intermission"!
And I'd really like to see advance notice of any future "intermissions". Not knowing it was coming made it even more destructive on people and projects.

Can't tell you enough how grateful I am that you have started doing your #steemnews posts again. It is a great way for me to get an overview of what is currently going on in the STEEM Universe!

Appreciate the amount of time you spend putting these posts together. Thank you again.

definitely a timesaver ..

especially for people who more or less hate crawling around the in-crowd to see who's last weeks prom queen ... this thing is perfect, thanks!!!!!

10k minnows hm ? interesting numbers i wish they could be extended with
'powered down this week'
'powered down this week and transferred between acts'
'powered down this week and sold off'
and see who's the real culprit and who should have their rewards halved :D

back with the popular opinion and the rock-solid theories you just hate to hear

any of you fatcats up for a steemchain demo contest to see who can hack it the most in the least kb with the lowest end machines ? ... i would be but i'm guttertrash and i dont have money :)

and hey, you can steal all the code afterwards cos it would have to be open source in your world i suppose
