Does Steem Have More Useful dApps Than Other Chains?

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

I was wondering about this, as it seems there are many Steem dApps. Most of them relate to accessing (reading) or adding (writing) text data to the blockchain. They are highly tailored to text media and user interactivity, i.e. social media.

There are video and sound dApps. Apps like d.tube and the video storage requirements mean the blockchain isn't used to store the actual video thoufh, just the data related to where the video is and any text in a video upload. The same for dSound.

Not everything can go on the chain. To think everything should go on a chain is misguided as I see it. Making everyone host video files, sounds files or other large files is unfeasible for costs when there is no direct monetary return for everyone that hosts a chain being able to support that infrastructure. It's also a complete waste of resources.

Even the many nodes to host the same data in a hundred locations is a waste when you think about it. It's only useful for trustless consensus integrity. Private companies have redundancies if many servers, sure, and they generate revenue to pay for their data storage networks that have failover support. How many redundant copies of the data is really required? Three? Ten? Anymore is just a waste of their resources.

The same practical reality for centralized data storage seems to get dissolved in the attachment to a decentralized "solution" for "everything". In efforts to maintain trustless integrity for data in financial matters like a digital currency or of information, we are bloating up blockchains.

How many copies of data are there really needed for various apps or dApps? Does all data "need" to be on a blockchain? Where is the limit of what gets put on there? How do we pay for the growing size when we just throw everything on a blockchain?

But getting back to the dApps on a blockcahin. Textual data information is the feasible limits of a blockchain. Steem has already grown to over 150GB in 2 years. other blockchains aren't at that size yet, or close to it, as far as I know. Bitcoin has been running for 9 years and hasn't gotten that big because it's just about financial data.

http://stateofthedapps.com allegedly shows many apps on various chains. But, it seems to only list apps from Ethereum and EOS. Does that seem right?

The site motto is:

EXPLORE DECENTRALIZED APPLICATIONS (APPS BUILT ON BLOCKCHAIN)

Where is Steem? Where are all the Steem dApps listed on that site? Apparently, a site called State of the dApps doesn't consider Steem dApps relevant, at all.

That's an outright sham and false claim. Steem has been around for over two years. It was the first social blog blockchain. You would think that it would merit being listed on a site for dApps, especially in their "Social" dApps section.

Plus, look at all the apps they list and the amount of user. They only reach into the hundreds. Steem has thousands on each day.

I conclude Steem's flagship dApp of steemit.com, and all the other dApps for the chain dwarf the amount of dApp users on other chains. More people use Steem dApps than any other blockchain. That also tells me Steem dApps are more useful to people than the others. Or am I wrong here?

What do you think about the lack of visibility for Steem dApps. Why is this the happening?

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Just yesterday I did a comment on this. Here it is again:

From a user of EOS, ETH and STEEM.
I have played with all these coins, and others, but this are the the platform likes :)

  • From ETH I got no engagement at all... i just used it to participate in ICOs.

  • From EOS I have EOS Knights ... playing games.

  • I haven't tried TRON yet.

  • From STEEM I have social engagement, blogging, reading ..... I have delegations to more than 5 projects, I use more than five different dApps, utopian, dtube, actifit, steemhunt, dlike, partiko ....gaming with steemmonsters ....

Talking about user engagement :) .... STEEM is by far the richest platform!

And I'm not saying this with rose glasses on. It is the objective truth.

I fully agree, it's probably due to the fact that steem was launched as an application-specific chain for this community-content-network-platform...

so everything built on top comes with a community.

I really don't understand why steem isn't getting more recognition for that, but I guess all the circle jerking and "social-mining" around it does leave too many with a foul taste I guess?!

It seemed like the others had lots of gambling.... yeah... what a great thing for society... more gambling :/

Where is Steem? Where are all the Steem dApps listed on that site? Apparently, a site called State of the dApps doesn't consider Steem dApps relevant, at all.

Let's have thousands of us banging on their door telling them we're here and relevant. What's out there is mostly pitiful.

This page has a form on it which can be used to submit new apps:

https://www.stateofthedapps.com/dapps/submit/new

ON IT!

Thanks for the tip, and thanks @krnel for bringing this to our attention!

Ugh, filling in the form I notice a few 'minor' issues: STEEM can't be picked as 'platform' - so we'll have to SPAM them otherwise. Did this instead: https://twitter.com/soyrosa/status/1073686708187742208

Yeah, it's a sad state of dApps... Steem looks like a bright light compared to them

The current model of saving everything does seem unsustainable in the long run. I expect there to be some clever tech to come out that starts using checkpoints to archive the blockchain.

Either that or we have to hope that solid state drives continue to get faster and hold more data at a rate that's quicker than blockchain demand.

I think the tech will grow with the ideas from here on out, if we see how usb stick memory progressed for example

I hope there is. I suggested it in 2017 as well, to archive older parts of the chain, and put them on legacy nodes that have less frequent access and less demand. The more recent stuff to be on main nodes. Something like that.

I havent been so active on the steem blockchain last weeks because I have been checking out EOS and Tron. My whole portfolio consists now of Steem, Eos and Trx as they are to me what seem to be the blockchains that have the most activity and good tech behing them. I appreciate ETH also, but thats for later!
Its quite sad that steem blockchain as you say doesnt seem to get much attention but I blame it on the fact that we are far from needing decentralized social media sites, purely because the masses are to dumb to even care by now and we will have to wait for a new gen of thinkers to grow up, and this is what it boils down to I strongly believe.

Eos and Tron, the first really active dapps seem to be something that was bound to attract volume- online casinos, mainly dice games for now.

If anyone has trx or eos sat in a wallet collecting dust, then its worth learning about dividends and also staking.

I am very happy to still be here and after a long tech free holiday, in spring I will be topping up for a great long term investment of Steem!

I have some EOS, but don't do anything with it lol. What do you suggest?

You're waiting until spring to get into lots of STEEM?

You could go buy some eosdice on newdex then stake it on the game to recieve daily dividends! 😊

Not sure what to make of it. I know that Steem gets lots of shade in the crypto world, but you would think it wouldn't affect something like this. Guess the host of that site isn't impartial.

Yeah, seems like a heavy bias :/

The market is getting wrekt for now, bit from these ashes will rise the phoenix !!

Yeah, we either break or stand up against the pressure and surmount it.

But of course!!

There are many reasons. The easiest one to point at is that STEEM is a social media bubble because it is a social media. nobody bothers to talk about the project that much outside of STEEM front ends.

There is also the bias for BTC and ETH and EOS is only getting attention because of the Ethereum killer narrative. At least http://www.blocktivity.info is honest. My biggest hopes are actually @steemmonsters and @steemhunt If we can promote these two outside of STEEM we may have a chance at breaking into the crypto-mainstream. Few sites like http://stateofthedapps.com with low Alexa rankings won't do much IMHO.

Fiat to STEEM conversion offered by something like @blocktrades or @steemit would actually be great.
