Shadow Photo Contest ~ The Earl on the clock tower

My photography shows a detail of the clock tower of hour of the Wuerzburg city hall. The figure is a part of tower clock and stands for the real person Earl Eckhart de Foro who lived in this tower in the 12th century. He was murdered in 1201. As a late honor given to him the tower was na after him later: Zum Grafeneckert.

I add three photos but it is just one motive. The first photo was the one I wanted to contribute with:

The second photo shows the spot where the motive is located.

And because it was such a ice cold but clear and beautiful morning when I went to work, I decided to shoot a second photo of the earl ...

I like the warm sunlight and the colors of the late afternoon sun on the first photo. The contours of the shadow are a little bit blurry on the uneven wall plaster because of the low sun. Which of the two photos do you like best? Do you think, it was the right decision to participate with the late afternoon photography or should I have chosen the clear morning photo?

I took these photos with my Nikon COOLPIX S9600.
