Song of the Day - Stravinsky "Suite Italienne"

in #recordpool6 years ago

This is my submission for @recordpool, Song of the Day.

The Suite Italienne was derived from the ballet "Pulcinella" by Igor Stravinky by the composer himself. It was scored in one version for violin and piano, and then later another version for 'cello and piano. Speaking as a violinist, I can safely say with no bias at all, that the violin and piano version is far superior!

The Ballet was originally composed for the famed "Ballet Russes" ballet company under the leadership of Diaghilev, and the music was to be a neo-classical reworking of themes that were believed to have been composed by Pergolesi. However, in the end music was badly atrributed (as was much of the music from that age), and in truth was probably music composed by Domenico Gallo, Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer, Carlo Ignazio Monza, and Alessandro Parisotti. I have included an embed of the original music for comparison!

As an another interesting side-note. The costume and set designer for this ballet premiere was Pablo Picasso.

Extra clips are below! Enjoy it, and this was written for @kiwideb!

Beautiful piece of music @bengy! I don't listen to classical enough but I am partial to strings more than anything else so this is perfect!

Thanks! I really love the original Baroque pieces, but I do love the resetting of the neo-classical Stravinksy...

Just watching the cello version. Cello is my favourite string instrument but I must admit this piece sounds better in a higher key on the violin. I prefer cello used for lower and slower music!

It's really interesting it if you hear the originals and how much the harmonies and setting was changed over the 300 years separation in compositional style!

Ok, I take it all back. I love (at least some) Stravinski now! I even liked the cello version, and I often don't like cello. They can be a bit dreary and depressing. Once it went into the Serenata I liked the violin better though.

I must get organised with GinaBot so I'm notified when I'm tagged. But luckily I looked in time! Off to read the post about the different phases of classical now...
