Have You Made Yourself Feel Uncomfortable Today?

in #psychology6 years ago

Personal stagnation happens when we become complacent with our circumstances.

Stagnation is a feeling that we have all experienced at some point in our lives. When things begin to feel stale and life no longer excites us on a day to day basis.

Perhaps our job situation is uninspiring or our relationship has lost its luster. More likely, the stagnation is the result of a lack of personal growth and evolution.

Many people reach adulthood, find the person they want to marry, land the job that fulfills their financial needs, and then rest on their laurels from a personal development standpoint. I know there have been plenty periods throughout my life where I became complacent and less proactive than I should have been.

Stop and smell the roses, then move on to the next part of life's garden

Once a person attains most of their biggest goals in life, it's easy to put further personal progression on hold. This is completely understandable, as it's great to be able to take your foot off the gas and coast every now and again.

Eventually, your satisfaction will plateau and you will desire something more than what your life currently offers. In order to feel that deep sense of satisfaction again, you must consciously step outside of what you are comfortable with.

Taking a leap of faith into the unknown is scary, intimidating, and challenging, but is the only way to continue our growth as human beings. Fear is at once our greatest enemy as well as our best teacher.

When we face our fears, we challenge our basic assumption of who we are and what we are capable of. And when we realize the fear was unfounded, as is usually the case, we are emboldened and empowered to keep pushing further.

Have you made yourself feel uncomfortable today?

I've always found facing my fears to be one of the most therapeutic and transformative experiences in life. Comfort zones only become more strict and solid over time, preventing spontaneity from ever making its way in.

We must have faith that we will be able to maneuver through the chaos and uncertainty of the unknown. By traversing territory that makes us feel uneasy, we strengthen our capacity to face new and novel challenges that will continue to arise as we expand our conception of ourselves.

Personal stagnation is a slow death of the soul. When we don't intentionally create momentum through new actions and behavior choices, we are doomed to kill time instead of living within it.

If you are currently experiencing stagnation in your life, look at what you could be doing differently to change your circumstances. That initial pain and discomfort of stepping outside your usual routine will quickly fade into the background as you begin to experience the benefits of such personal paradigm shifts.

Feeling uncomfortable isn't easy, but it's the quickest way to break your mold and begin to reshape yourself into the person you want to become.

So true, fear holds us back from greater experiences.

As Humans, and as the Sons of God, we have a need to constantly progress. Failing to do so is akin to death; or is the very definition. Failure to grow due to complacency is a process I like to call soul-loss...

I wrote a piece about it here, if you are interested:
