In Celebration of 3 Years with Our Dog, We Took an Incredible Hike at Button Rock Preserve in Colorado Yesterday

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

3 years ago yesterday, we adopted our lovable oddball dog Quoia.

In 2015, we made the decision to adopt a dog. We weren't sure of what breed we wanted and went to many adoption events held by local shelters before finally finding Quoia.

And yes, that day happened to be on valentine's day. I promise, it wasn't intentional...things just worked out that way.

She's a border collie/Australian Shepherd mix, and as a result, she's a high-energy pup. When we first got her, no amount of ball-tossing would tame her level of energy. We joked if we could harness her energy using some kind of contraption, we would easily be able to power our home :)

To celebrate, we took a hike at Button Rock Preserve in Lyons, Colorado

The views were absolutely gorgeous and the weather was a perfect 60 degrees, which is certainly above average for February. Colorado has had one of its most mild winters in quite some time, and this could present a serious drought/wildfire risk if things don't turn around soon.

But in the moment, we enjoyed being able to take advantage of the conditions. The entire 5-mile hike, we saw a total of maybe 5 people, which made the experience all the more engrossing.

Our roommate Adam had tipped us off to the place over a year ago, and we were certainly glad to finally make the trip up to this hidden gem along the front range. The views of the reservoir from the top of the Sleepy Lion trail were spectacular.

Once hiking to the bottom, the remainder of the trail is along the North St. Vrain creek, which flows up against some breathtaking rock formations.

We definitely intend on returning to this spot, as the hike is a moderate, but rewarding jaunt through diverse and interesting mountain scenery. If you live along the front range in Colorado, you owe it to yourself to check this place out.

I honestly couldn't think of a better way to celebrate 3 years with our lovable mutt. Happy Valentine's day!
