Here Are My Top 5 Psychology Gems (9/16/16)

1.Paradoxes of Logic / Парадоксы логики (featuring @smolalit as author)

Everybody knows the word “logic”. All of us (a dustman and a  professor) use it in our everyday speech. Children know it and use it  for making their speech more meaningful. We are all sure, that people  understand us when we are speaking about “logical outcome of the case”,  “logical suggestion” or even about “women’s logic”.

2. The lies we tell ourselves - authority bias

It's Sunday morning and you've just woken up. After eating a delicious blini  for breakfast you take a shower and get dressed. When you go to brush  your teeth, however, you realize that you're out of toothpaste, so you  head to the supermarket to replace it. There are dozens of options and you want to try something new, but  you can't make up your mind. You notice one toothpaste has a picture of a  dentist wearing a white coat, so you pick it up and buy it,  rationalising that since their is a dentist on the box, it must be good. Congratulations! You've just fallen victim to the authority bias!

3. The Many Harms of Spanking in Less than 200 Words

I wish more parents knew the harm they inflict on their children when they spank
Spankings may damage the brain;  they teach the child that violence is acceptable; they let the child  know the parent will never negotiate; they teach the child fear the  person that is supposed to love them; they instill the idea of duty to  authority; they lead to resentment; they inspire the child to cut  themselves later to release pressure; they entice the children to become  cops or politicians so they can displace pent-up emotions onto others;  they allow for later self-destruction through drugs; they lead to the  child spanking their own children and perpetuating the cycle of child  hatred.

4. You do not 'have' Depression or ADHD or PTSD or [insert mental 'disorder']

That’s right. You don’t 'have' any of these so-called ‘illnesses’ or  ‘diseases’ because they don’t physically exist. I’ve quoted the Chair of  the DSM-IV Task Force before, and I’m sure I’ll quote him again: ‘There are no objective tests in psychiatry’ (Frances, 2014, p. 229, emphasis added). There are no objective tests in psychiatry: not for schizophrenia;  not for depression; not for ADHD; not for PTSD; and not for any other  psychological ‘disorder’.   Now, that does not mean that the things people experience or ways  they behave which many laymen and psychiatrists describe as symptoms of  discrete ‘disorders’, are not real. It does not mean that. But they are experiences/behaviors, not physical ailments.

5. Psychology: This Might Be The Reason Why You Like The Things You Do

Have you ever fallen into a pattern of behavior with a group of people?   Maybe you are the one who tells funny stories all the time or you are  the one who tells others about the latest gadgets.  It may be because  you like comedy or love tech and are happy to share your interests.  But  there is a chance that your behavior is the result of positive  reactions from the previous times you started to do that behavior.  If  you share an app that no one heard of and everyone starts to use it,  maybe it made you feel good.  So you tell them about another one and  still, another positive result.  This carries over to the next week where  you let everyone know about this cool new site called Steemit, which  leads them to high five you after they make there first dollar.  What  begins to happen is you start to pay more attention to the tech world.   You might go out of your way to look for new things to tell people  about.  And soon you become an expert who can spot the next thing from a  mile away.
