The Benefits of Prepping

in #prepping6 years ago

Maybe you've heard the term "Prepping" being tossed around in conversation and aren't sure what it means. In short, being a prepper refers to a way of life in which individuals prepare themselves and their families for survival in difficult times or even serious disaster situations. There are a variety of ways people prepare themselves for these situations, including the learning of survival skills and the accumulation and storage of food and supplies.

The prepper way of life is often met with reactions of confusion and even judgment, with onlookers viewing preppers as either extremists or religious fanatics waiting for the end of the world, but this is merely a stereotypical way of looking at preppers. In reality, there is a tremendous amount of value in the ability and desire to prepare oneself and one's family for potentially devastating situations. After all, life does not always go as planned and it is much better to be safe than sorry.

What is a Prepper?

A prepper is any individual who makes active preparations for a potential emergency or disaster that may occur in future, typically by stockpiling food and other supplies. Preppers are often referred to as survivalists. The motivation to become a prepper can range anywhere from the belief that a specific disaster will occur, to simply wanting to be prepared for the worst case scenario. Not all preppers are concerned about a particular event - generally, preppers strive to be self-sufficient and able to survive regardless of the specific circumstances or timing surrounding the disaster. Preppers are ready for anything that might come their way, whether it be a natural disaster, economic collapse, civil unrest or violence, or any other situation that might result in limited resources.

What are the Benefits of Prepping?

People decide to become preppers for a variety of reasons. Should a pandemic or disaster occur, the shelves at the grocery store will only be full for so long as everyone makes the mad dash to stock up on essential items. When the shelves are empty, it's every man for himself. It's easy to see why preppers tend to survive longer in emergency situations, not to mention why they are able to feel more security and struggle less with anxiety. If you only have enough food in your pantry to last a week, there is every reason to be nervous. But if you've been slowly collecting food for months, storing it in a safe place and taking care to gradually replace items that have expired, there is much less to worry about. It's ironic, because preppers sometimes get a bad rap for being paranoid or fearful, but they will be the last people who need to fear if disaster does strike.

Individuals rely heavily on government aid and protection, but the government cannot always be counted on for assistance in an emergency situation, especially if it the disaster is at a national level and millions are affected and in need of help. Under such duress, there is no guarantee that aid will find its way to every family in need before it's too late, or even at all, depending on the severity of the crisis. This is where preppers have a significant advantage in keeping their families safe and taken care of. Preppers will be ready to endure prolonged periods of uncertainty and panic, while others will struggle to determine where their next meal is coming from.

Prepping can involve a lot of time and resources, but it doesn't need to be overwhelming because it isn't something that needs to be accomplished all at once. Rather than trying to buy and store a year's supply of food in one month, food storage is something that can be built up a little at a time, picking up a few items during each trip to the grocery store, and using a spreadsheet to keep track of expiration dates. Food and water are two of the most important things to stock up on, but after getting those basics covered preppers can branch out to creating bug out bags or 72 hour emergency kits. Over time, preppers will also want to spend time developing skills such as hunting, fishing, purifying water, and starting a fire without matches, just to name a few.

Preppers are an asset to themselves and to their families. In a world where much is uncertain and no one knows what tomorrow might bring, preppers never need to be afraid of not being able to survive or protect their loved ones in the face of anything that might happen. There is no need to wait for something bad to happen before deciding to become prepared. Preppers are always thinking ahead, and it's never too early to get started.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://www.surviveuk.com/preppingbasics/the-benefits-of-prepping/
