Exploring Helsinki - Alvar Aalto's Home
My next destination was Alvar Aalto's home, about a half hour tram ride from the city centre of Helsinki. Residing in the leafy Munkkiniemi area this part of Helsinki is known for being fairly peaceful and close to the sea. Quite a contrast from the hustle and bustle of the city. The house itself is a little difficult to find as it resides on a slight hill and is camouflaged in with the other neighbouring buildings. I think that's one thing I like so much about Alvar's architecture, the fact that he was able to use the nature around to subtly blend in the harsh corners of the build and create a space for living that worked in harmony with nature instead of opposing. Oh yeah, and this was completed in 1936. Just incredible.
As I waited for a tour around the home I was happy that the sun came out and I was able to walk around the building and capture some of the angles with my film camera. It was fantastic to see his use of wood, a theme that would continue to the interior of the property, and also recognise his sense of exploration in this project. Yes, it was his home and very often his workplace, but he also used this building as a kind of stepping stone for many others that he wanted to pursue in the future. He was really a special architect. I hope you like these photos and I look forward to sharing some of the interior shots very soon.

I like a few of the features, the vertical wood clading. And the vines growing up the side.
I did similar clading inside my home with Ipe and Cumaru wood.
That's really cool. Yeah, seems kind of basic but thought it was a nice touch. Considering this house was completed in the mid 1930's it really blew me away with the overall modernity of the house.
For such an old building it looks very well looked after :)
Yeah! It's a nice space and is looked after well. The interior is really nice too. Just editing a few more photos haha
