Green Iguanas - Costa Rica

in #photography7 years ago

Costa Rica is blessed with an incredible diversity of wondrous creatures. Green Iguanas are one of my favourites and are regular visitors to my garden!
Strict vegetarians, Iguanas can often be seen basking in the sun to keep their body at the correct temperature for digestion. Fresh growth vegetation is preferred, along with fruits and flowers. Smaller young do apparently eat some insects also. Iguanas nests are burrows which they dig into riverbanks. I am told a large female can lay as many as 70 eggs. The young are bright green and a true wonder to behold. Hopefully I can get some pictures of some Iguana babies soon!

I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL not to long ago (close to the beach), and I would see many of these awesome creatures all over the place. They range in size and color, but generally stop you to watch in awe whenever you see one. Nice post :)

Hi Dave,
That is awesome - so glad you have a good population up there in Fort Lauderdale!

Good to meet you :D

Yes, its pretty cool... on the beach.. in the driveway... in the back yard... they are everywhere and some of them are many feet long. I always stop and watch because sometime you can really see how old their lineage is in their look. I imagine baby dinosaurs ;)

And nice to meet you too!
