Slight sadness about leaving Lapland tomorrow + some photos by Leo

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

So our holiday is drawing to its end, and we are leaving early tomorrow morning. We'll be driving towards Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle and we'll visit the Santa Claus Village for a few hours. Later we'll drive to Oulu, for an overnighter at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

On Tuesday, after a breakfast at the hotel, we'll drive to Tikkakoski and spend the night over at my in-laws, after which we'll take the road towards our home in Lahti.

It's a bit saddening that our trip wasn't a long one, but I really need to get home before the 27th, because that's mine and Vera's 10th wedding anniversary and I really don't want to miss that. (Although I'm still at loss about what to get her.)

Anyway, I don't want to bore anyone with our married life, instead here are some shots created by my older son, Leo (Licensing differs from mine, these are all licensed Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike by Leo Larnos). I'll be crediting everything this post receives to him, and will power up his upcoming account with it.

Leo's photos:

Entering the amethyst mines.

When we were at the amethyst mines, Leo suddenly realized he had his camera with him. :)

Dad posing with a Tree

He'd just begun to use manual mode on his DSLR, so he didn't always get the pictures right at the first try, but he did try...

Little creek

...and with a little bit of trial and error...

Leon kuvia_0005.jpg
Flowers

...he started getting the hang of it.

The family "cottage"

Sometimes I had to do a bit editing...

The barn

...but often just minimal adjustments.

Flowers in the yard.

Sometimes they were just perfect.

Niittyleinikki (Common buttercup, Ranunculus acris)

And don't come telling me a kit lense can't do a decent bokeh! ;)

Leon kuvia_0016.jpg
Reindeer stew on mashed potatoes.

Eating at Huttu-Uula is always one of the high points of our trips to Pyhä. I like the fishy dishes, but reindeer stew is almost everyone's favorite (except for Miro who always ends up getting sausages with fries and mashed potatoes.)

Leon kuvia_0018.jpg
Testing out daddy's 10-18mm ultra wide angle lens.

Leo is always keen to testing out something new, and my ultra-wide is one of those things. I think he could find some exceptional subjects to shoot with it.

Woolly plant?

I don't recall what this plant was called. I liked to think of it as wild cotton in my youth.

On the scenery lift towards the top of Kultakero.

And up we went, to eat pancakes...

Restaurant Tsokka, on the top of the hill.

On top of Kultakero, we'd visit Tsokka and eat some exceptionally good cloudberry pancakes there, with whipped cream, and cocoa on side.

Leon kuvia_0023.jpg
The scenery seen from the top.

We could see so far from up there. Sadly my smart phone makes everything look so small, but these DSLR's they sure do the trick. This photo is part of five others. We are planning to stitch them into a panorama.

Going down on the lift.

Leon kuvia_0029.jpg
Huttu-Uula, the restaurant we ate the reindeer stew in.

Oh, and we ate pizza there today with the boys, and my aunt who got here yesterday. Mine was a smoked salmon pizza, and Leo got a reindeer pizza.

Some vehicle.

We call it Lumikissa (= Snowcat in English)

Leon kuvia_0031.jpg
One has to shoot pictures of stones too, you know.

Stones have a beauty of their own, I do shoot them too quite often.

The tree, and the stone.

Leon kuvia_0033.jpg
A somewhat smaller tree.

Leon kuvia_0034.jpg
Dad isn't the only one who can take pictures of flowers.

When I took the last "One photo every day" project picture, Leo tried his skills too. And while I did give him some advice...

Leon kuvia_0035.jpg
More proof that Leo is firmly following in his dads footsteps.

His skill is clearly showing.

Thank you for watching these through and hopefully reading the backstory too. Leo would probably like it if everyone upvoted and commented these, gave any good advice and resteemed it too, so we can give him a good head start when his account is up. What do you say, can we do it for him?

Cheers and see you again in the next one. I'll be posting from mobile tomorrow, as we are on the road again. Good night for now!

Really awesome photos sir!

Would you be willing to Delegate some SP to @bellyrub? : )

To which question are you referring to?

Thank you!

I will get back to you on this when I get home. Tempted, but I'm not sure how to do delegation and I'm fairly sure it is not very easy via mobile.

Great let me know if you are on Discord you can find me at @zeartul it is a very easy process todo.

Ok, later then. :)

Well anything that's good gotta end someday :) Hope you enjoyed your holidays I followed you through most of your post there and I think you enjoyed it there!

So many photos here wow. But the one with vehicle is the coolest :D What is this btw? Can you call it a car? English is not my first language :/

I found a Wikipedia entry for it. Snowcat is the term for it in English too.

We sure did enjoy all of our stay. :) Thanks for following our story.

Oh thanks a lot! I figured it was probably something to do with the snow, just didn't see those things that mostly are around the wheels, bu I guess they take them off during summer time.

I liked all of these photos ! I really enjoy the view of the forest because I simply love to wander around nature :) Stones do have a beauty of their own and I have taken many photos of all kinds of stones myself.

I'm super appreciating all these comments. Thanks. I'm sure Leo is thankful too when he sees what you said tomorrow morning. :)

Haha I appreciate all the awesome shots you're sharing with us !

Very complete post man i like your dedication and passion making good content.
I love how looks this machine

Thanks, I find it awesome that people like what I do. I'll be sure to keep up with that passion, as creating these stories is kind of fun. Especially for such an appreciative audience! :)

Sure man :) , now i have idea of what can i find in finland, before your post i only knew the soccer team as rops and hjk, this the potential of steemit learn and have fun with some good articles as yours

That's certainly a good aspect, and cool to know.

One word: mashed potatoes!!! Oh, wait it's two, whatever...
With a reindeer stew, olalala!

What was your post again about? I remember there were flowers, forest, number one dad, his kids and mines!
Delicious food erases all memories in my head! :(

number one dad

Now you are flattering me. I hope my kids will one day find me as cool as you do.

Good foods have a habit of doing things like those you describe to people. ;)

Okay, okay. Kinda normal dad. I didn't have one, so any good dad loving his kids is a number-one dad for me lol.

Of course I will resteem this post for Leo ;) liked the pictures so an upvote seems also very appropriate... Good job :)

Thank you. I will tell Leo your regards in the morning. I bet he'll be surprised of all the support! :)

Oh and I forgot to tell you, happy 10th anniversary, love is very important and beautiful :)

Thank you very much. Now only if I could figure out what to get for her... :)

Hahaha oh my!! That IS the question ;) Bet she already has everything ;) ... A good massage or a day at the spa is often appreciated... for the two of you, get time alone to reconnect :)

I agree. Leo is getting better than 'dad'. btw how old is leo? i have my son aaron 12yrs old. i do let him use my dslr and lumix lx3. somehow, kids nowadays are glued to either pc or mobile. maybe i should bring him to rurals without net. :)
Awesome holiday vacation. Thanks for sharing it

Thanks for the great comment!

Leo is 11 years old. I bought him a Canon 1100D for his 8th birthday, he's been a bit on and off using it, but I guess he has finally got bitten by some photobug, because he's carrying it everywhere.

I think the camera is a good way to get him out and off his phone. I will probably need to get Miro one as well.

Not sure if there is any other medicine for technology addictions than to take their phones and PCs away for a while.

We should remember. kids are not like us adults :) Right now my son school started. And wife is guarding him like a hawk. making sure to get good grades. I will try to steal my son this coming sunday and bring him to the park to shoot with me. :)
True. the camera might help in reducing that mobile/pc addiction :)
but. i think best way is just to introduce the beauty of photography and our next problem is how to stop our kids when they overdo photography :)
I gave up. i not dare stop him from using his mobile/pc. I would rather do hara-kiri :)

Wow it almost looks like Washington.
did you get any picts from insidethe mine?
:O

Well it was an open-pit mine, so we weren't actually "inside", the corridor did go through some winter mining shelters though. And we were so busy digging up amethysts we forgot about our cameras for a while. ;)

It's a peculiar business idea, first bill the tourists for a tour of the mine, then let them do the work of digging up the gems, let them get a tiny stone with them, and then bill them again for extra stones.

LMFAO
if someone happens to hit the edge of a vain,
gotta close the mine down or a couple days. might not be safe till we dig an area out. -wink wink-
:D
did u get any stones?

also im wondering....
I have had reihindeer pizza but smoked salmon sounds really interesting. was the smoked fish cooked a second time with the pizza? was the cheese on top of the fish? was there cheese, what kiind? what kind of sause? I cant even start to understand what that might taste like. oh thin crust? im for some reason thinking its like creamcheese on a paper thin bagel with lox on top maybe a couple capers.
im very interested in trying one now. first I ever heard of one.

Nice photos taken by leo. I think he is growing fast like his father.btw "dady's 10-18 mm" is the best.upvoted and followed.

Yea, heh I guess it's kind of funny photo of me. Thanks for the support! :)
