Sequence 9 - 03 December 2018

Following my daily photography routine, produced a few more beautiful images (shown in this post) of this beautiful flower before we had a mini-disaster.

The flower stalk has 'fallen' over and I'm not sure if this was due to the weight of the flower head, excess water from recent rainfall, the flower trying to reach over for more sunlight (as the position is completely shaded in the afternoon) or perhaps it was a combination of all three.

At first, I thought it may have been trampled by a stray animal but since I can't see any damage to the rest of the plant or the flowers, I tend to think it was due to natural occurrences.

Anyhoo, before our mini-disaster, I did manage to grab the next few photos for my flower sequencing and I've also included some close-ups of the petals and a very short visit from a Backyard Buddy.

The colouring of the petals is quite unique and one of the most fascinating features of this flower. In some light, they can appear to be fluorescent and at times they can almost seem to be glowing.

One morning, after taking my daily photos, I noticed that the sun was shining through the leaves of a larger tree, creating a dappled sunshine effect on the flower. While watching the display, I noticed that this produced a weird optical illusion which made the flower appear to fluoresce, taking on the impression of an octopus or some other such marine life.

There is some footage of this display, taken in an attempt to capture the 'illusion' however, as it is with most things, the video doesn't really capture the full effect in the same way that my eyes did in real life.

Nevertheless, I will try to edit it down to a short #dtubesnap which I'll post tomorrow, so please stay tuned for Aloe Duckeri - Episode 4

Moral to the story - Go outside and take some time to stop! and just appreciate the beauty of this world that surrounds us, eternally...!
