Entry for Whaletank Hangout # 41 - Teach Kids About Finances
I'm a slow learner. With all the talks about SMTs, EOS, and UIAs, it's something I'd like to look into. If you look at my posts, you'll see that I'm a proponent of incremental changes (small steps, big steps, missteps, call them what you want, but I just want to call them step). This is a step in better understanding these technologies.
My Life
I grew up in a family of seven. You can say that we were well-off. But you know, life happens. We make decisions and learn to live out the consequences of those decisions. This is an effort to live out one of those decisions.
My parents were both employees. And they gave their best to provide for us, and I'm thankful for it. But I know that there was something lacking.
How Much Does it Cost to Dream?
Dream Big. It's free to dream. Dream comes with a price.
These are niches when it comes to dreams. But how often do dreams come true? Who makes those dreams come true? Is it really okay to dream? Daydream or nightdream or simply dream? Does it matter?
So whether you call it a dream or a passion, I call it a desire. A desire to teach.
Start With What I Can Control
I believe in starting with whatever is in my power. Posting in Steemit is within my power; asking my children to join Steemit is within my power. Whatever is within my power I execute.
My Desire
I've longed to teach my children about finances. Not with real, but perhaps with play money. But I've always had the challenge of inviting them to join a site. Then Steemit came along.
A Turnkey Solution?
I've joined Whaleshares Hangout #226 and I see value in it as a channel.
With all these premises down, I would like to embark on a journey. I'd like to embark on creating my own UIA. I perceive joining a Whaletank is a step in that direction.
My Proposal
I would like to embark on this family project and look for sponsorship from whaleshares to teach my children about finances.
The Rough System
In no particular order:
- I will ask each one of them to create a Steemit account
- From time to time, they come up with things they would like to buy
- I will ask them to make a post of the thing that they want to buy
- I will ask them to 'buy me in' to the project
a. I will ask them to categorize whether it's a need or a want
b. I will ask them how they plan to generate funds - I will ask them to ask help from me to generate funds for the project
- I will help them raise funds for their project
- I will grow with them in doing these projects
Cool idea and nice bonding with the kids.

Once again great article, when I was younger I wish I had learned about finances. I hope they teach this kind of things at school. When I was a kid back then whenever I get money I just use it all on my wants never really saving up. I realized this all when I started my career and work, by paying the bills, budgeting my money. So I think it is really essential to teach kids about finances at a young age.
This is really a great idea the rough system you introduced, I think it will be effective to teach your kids about finances. When the right time comes that I would have kids also I will be teaching them about finances. Great work bro.

The habit of putting aside something is a habit I hope my kids develop, although they're already in their teens.

hi @eastmael, great idea. most people don't have a system to get out of debt and build wealth. most people do what they saw their parents do and so the debt trap spreads from generation to generation. your kids are fortunate that you are actively taking steps to change that pattern.
