Seed the World - Kokopelli Seed Growing

in #permaculture6 years ago (edited)

Seed the world, make it a better place. For you and for me and the entire human race

If you, like me, have three square meals a day and a roof over your head, and sorting out your next meal involves a trip to the supermarket or a phone call to the pizza shop it can be hard to understand how it must feel to live in poverty. Right on the margins of existence. For too many people in too many countries having 'nothing' means having absolutely nothing. There are so many reasons why 9million people on this planet die from hunger and hunger-related illness each year, many of whom are children but one of these reasons is seed shortage.

The problem is, the only seeds available to many farmers in some of the poorest parts of the world, where food shortages are chronic, are for varieties of crops that do not produce their own seeds. There is nothing accidental about this. Seed varieties known as 'F1 hybrids' have been bred to be like this. And who would do something so idiotic and unnatural? The seed companies of course who naturally claim, and correctly, that these seeds produce much higher yields but it locks the farmers into needing to purchase new seeds each year, and if they can't afford to due to climate causing a failed crop or a family illness or something, then they go hungry. Let's not forget, that the vast majority of the world's farmers it's a subsistence living and not a huge industrial operation like we may be used to seeing in the US or Europe.

The Kokopelli Seed Foundation started in France and has now spread around the world and its goal is to create a "community supported seed fund' to provide farmers and gardeners in the poorer parts of the world with the seeds they need for their gardens and small farms. Anyone can join in by growing and collecting seeds, which is how it was done in times gone by before the emergence of commercial seed growers and the introduction of GM seeds. (A topic for another day!)

So, practically. What can we all do?

Well, it's not as hard as you may think to become a Kokopelli seed grower as many food plants provide loads of seeds. A pumpkin or melon will produce hundreds of seeds, a tomato about 70 and a lettuce that goes to seed, somewhere in the region of 10000 seeds.

Imagine just 10 tomato plants in your garden or greenhouse. This could produce around 0.4kg of seed or enough to make over 2500 packets of 30 seeds each. Mind-blowing !!

Life's not about the hustle. It's all about the humanity

Hi @nathen007 ! Great to see someone outside of France talking about Kokopelli! Recently, the organisation. and Dominique have been under quite a bit of attack for being "conspiracy theorists" and for "fraud," but I suspect that's mostly made up nonsense (they certainly do have plenty of enemies) and personally agree with pretty much everything Dominique writes about in his massive seed compendiums. Also bought quite a few of their seeds and have a book written by Blanche Magarinos-Rey, their legal representative, which I thoroughly recommend to anyone interested in seeds and who reads French. Look forward to hearing more from you on the subject!
