Football team fear a VOLCANO has opened up in the middle of pitch with hot fumes rising from cracks in the ground

A football team has raised the alarm fearing a new volcano has emerged in the middle of their pitch.

Players noticed smoke emerging from cracks in the ground on the playing field in a small town.

It is also used for grazing goats, and a number of the animals have been burnt, from the steam escaping through the grass.

Locals fear that their football pitch might be the birthplace of a brand new volcano.
The authorities were notified and carried out a series of tests but are unable to say if it is a volcano or not.

Residents have been told that they are not in danger but soldiers have been deployed to the field to seal it off.

The State Civil Protection coordinator, Pedro Carlos Mandujano, said: "We can not say that this is the birth of a volcano at the moment.

"However, we will wait for the results of the investigations.!
Specialists say it is not magma rising from the ground but embers caused by an increase in underground geothermal activity.

According to tests based on burning fragments found in the local area, temperatures in the subsoil have reached up to 250 degrees Celsius.

Mr Mandujano said that no explanation is currently be ruled out but first reports indicate that there is not volcanic activity in the area.

He added that there is not the "telluric" movement of soil that would be expected in the instance of a new volcano.

Experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico are now carrying out further investigations.

There are believed to be 3,000 volcanoes located in Mexico but only a dozen or so of them are considered active.
