Wrestling Thursday: Oh, hey, UK!

in #news6 years ago

We're all gonna pretend the UK tournament happened this week, and wasn't taped last week. It certainly provided some of the week's biggest moments. Let's get into everything that happened this week. This is Wrestling Thursday.

Raw

Large men talk

Face Lashley is boring and I don't care. Tweener, arrogant Roman is compelling. This segment went no where, though.

Best Tag Team

Well, okay. It's leading to a Roman/Lashley match in Extreme Rules and also led to this match, which was... fine. I'm glad Revival won.

Axel... wins?

So now Axel gets to beat Matt Hardy on Raw? This is an odd world we're in, but I kinda dig it. Go B-Team!

Wait, AOP work here?

Sorry, Gibson brothers. Let's get AOP that monster push and onwards to the title.

A Moment of Bliss

Now that she didn't win MiTB, I guess Nattie gets to be an actual face? Like, a believable one? And also beat Bliss? Match was solid. Natalya always has solid matches.

Fi. Na. Ly.

Yes! The longest of long burns is finally aflame, and the Bayley and Sasha feud is on, with a brutal beatdown by Bayley that was cheered wildly by the crowd.

Counselling?

So... dudes attack other dudes literally all the time. But when Bayley does it, she gets told she's ruining the women's revolution and needs counselling? This is some grade A bullcrap right here. I would buy it if Kurt was a heel. But as a face? This is a bad direction. Let them fight! (which, I know, will happen eventually, and will be awesome).

No way, Jose.

This was Mojo's best heel mic work. He's still not great, but he's passable now!

Braun is an enigma

So... wait... what? Why did Braun want this match? Why was he such a great partner if he still hates Kevin? I know he's a monster, but this is just confusing.

Also, poor Kevin's car

Kevin was totally a face in this segment. But he's still the heel. I am SO confused.

And still the champ?

This was a great match. Better than last week's. The aftermath was interesting. Another Shield reunion? A Roman/Drew feud? I'd be WAY more into that than anything with Lashley. Way more.

UK Tournament

I didn't watch the first night of the UK tournament, and I didn't watch the entire second night, skipping ahead to see highlights and results. But a few of the matchups were must watch.

Undisputed Era vs. Moustache Mountain for the NXT tag titles

Trent Seven was the worst worker in this match. Trent Seven is very, very good. A super hit crowd and a surprise win (well, surprise for anyone for which it wasn't spoiled by WWE's own app) combined for a terrific opener.

Shayna Baszler vs. Toni Storm for the NXT Women's title

The UK crowd absolutely adores Toni Storm, probably because she's an incredible worker with tons of charisma who works a lot in the UK. Just a guess. Shayna is a terrific heel. She's just so hateable in the ring. Sadly, after the tag title change, and considering Storm isn't signed to a full time contract, I never had a doubt about the identity of the winner.

Pete Dunne vs. Zack Gibson for the WWE UK title

Even though he's been doing it for a while, watching Dunne work as a face is weird. But, you know, I say this every time: Pete Dunne only has great matches. As a heel, as a face. Doesn't matter. Gibson's "I'm Liverpool's number one," routine worked really well in London, as it would in most places in England, but if he wants to make it in WWE, I hope he realizes people outside of England don't have as many feels about Liverpool.

Smackdown

No Shinsuke, because... he was bitten by a police dog before the match? Whaaaat?

MizTV

This was not good. It would lead to very good things later on, but nothing in this segment was good. Which is amazing, as it had Miz and Bryan.

Brute wins!

Well, one way to get heel heat for Rusev is putting him in a match with Woods. But, really, why? He's a face. Everyone except WWE knows this. Match was good. Both guys are very good.

Sanity still works here!

In NXT, Dain was the one getting title opportunities, but Eric Young is the official leader, I guess. So this made sense. Match was fun until the Usos showed up.

Second week loss

Dammit, WWE. Could you not wait a bit more to hand Young, Dain, and Wolfe their first loss? I get it. Jeff Hardy is a big deal, and the Usus are great. But Sanity just got here and are trying to establish themselves as a force. They should not be losing this soon. One way in which this is acceptable? They (either creative irl or, in storyline, Sanity) realize they need Nikki, and she gets called up.

A Becky push?

Well, well. Becky is actually getting to win. Someone may have noticed how super over she is. This was too short, but crisp and fun.

Asuka's gonna kill you

So next week, Asuka's definitely destroying this dude.

Hell yes!

So the match was very good. As one would expect. Bryan is amazing, of course, but Harper is an amazing worker and actually got to show it. And then, well... I thought I was totally done with Kane, but a Team Hell No reunion? That's gonna be fun. Heck, it already is fun.

205 Live

So much for that Nese push

Weren't we telling a "Tony Nese is finally stepping up" story? I guess not? Match was solid.

Man of the hour debut

So Lio Rush is finally here, and, well... he's great! I didn't want to like him after he was an ass about Emma's firing last year, but he's legit great in the ring. Super crisp.

Lucha Over?

So... evil has triumphed in this feud? This drawn out feud? There may be a brilliant long term plan

NXT

A whole lotta goodness in this one!

Satanist vs. The Devil

It is a source of continued amazement that Aleister Black gets to be a good guy on WWE tv while being portrayed as a satanist. Welp, things are gonna get interesting on that score, with Ciampa declaring himself - as many fans have before him - The Devil. If this all leads to Ciampa vs. Gargano for the title at NXT Brooklyn, with Johnny finally winning both the title and the feud, I am absolutely here for it.

Candice Wrestling!

So Candice LeRae actually got to have a match that wasn't about Johnny, and got to do the thing she does as well as anyone: Take a bunch of punishment from a bigger, stronger opponent, and find a way to win. As for Lacey Evans, while my dislike for her is well documented, I gotta admit that she is now legit good at wrestling.

Sweet Christmas!

I'm not gonna claim this match was as good as the tag title match in the UK tournament. There was nothing on the line, and the crowd wasn't giving the nuclear heat it was in the Royal Albert Hall. That said, they added two guys, and the excellent Trent Seven was still probably the worst worker in the match. Maybe tied with Cole. If this is leading to Adam Cole vs. Ricochet for the North American title, I am super here for it. Meanwhile, this was some awesome wrestling.
