Wrestling Thursday: You Can't Teach That
In a big week of wrestling, the release of Big Cass from his WWE contract may have been the biggest piece of news. Or at least the biggest non-depressing news. This is Wrestling Thursday.
7 Feet Fired
At one point, Enzo and Cass seemed destined for stardom. They weren't great wrestlers, but Enzo had charisma and Cass was tall, and sometimes that's enough. Now, they hate each other, and are also gone from WWE. Sometimes being a bad person can actually have repercussions!
Cass was fired, according to rumors, for going off script a few weeks ago, plus general bad behavior and drunkness. Basically, much like his former tag team partner and former real life good friend, his negatives outweighed his positives. And he is done. I don't often applaud people being fired, but I'll make an exception for Colin Cassidy. Cya bye.
RIP Leon White
The man who was Big Van Vader passed away at age 63. He was a revolutionary big man, a legit badass, a huge star in WCW and worldwide. In his apex, he may have been the most intimidating in ring presence off all time. RIP.
Raw
Stone Cold Rousey
This segment used both women in a way that maximized their skills: Alexa did most of the talking, and Ronda dished out the ultra violence to anyone who came near her. Hot start to the show.
InterDolphanental Champ
The match was great. Of course the match was great. My personal disdain of Ziggler aside, he is a great worker. And Seth is Seth. Dolph winning was a shocker. With a rematch coming next week, I'm guessing this new feud goes straight to Extreme Rules? And how does Drew figure into all of this?
Well, that was Roode
Huh. I mean, it's nice for Hawkins that he's getting regular work again. And lemme replay my broken record: Roode should be a heel already. He's a boring face.
The Braun and KO show
So Braun is officially the company's top face now, I think. And KO continues to be doing great promo work which makes no sense in kayfabe. I mean, how did he think this was gonna go?
Deleted
This was a nothing match, but the B-Team promo that preceded it was awesome. Bo doing an impersonation of his real life brother Bray is a little too uncanny, but in the best way.
The Wrestling Guru
Why is this happening? Why is poor Chad Gable stuck in the middle of it.
Finally?
Wait, we're actually doing this? The Sasha/Bayley feud is finally happening? And who's the face? I... think it may be Sasha? But I am not sure. The match that preceded the meltdown was fun. Riott Squad is just super fun.
Rome and Bob
Rusev should sue Roman for copyright infringement. Only Rusev gets to address Bobby's as Bob. Also, these guys are due to probably lose in whatever multi person match the Raw brand has in Extreme Rules.
Bottom Guys Out
Should I be happy that The Revival got screentime against semi main eventers? Nah. Let's push these guys. They are legit awesome.
No Way Out
Yeah, I was kinda checked out for this match. Are we pretending to push Mojo again?
Character development?
I'm not sure what this Elias segment means, but that's a good thing.
Constable Asshole
So this is what it looks like when Baron Corbin enjoys his job? I'm intrigued by this version of Corbin. I suspect he's gonna job to Braun, but this is an interesting change of pace.
Smackdown
Mella. Money. You know the drill.
Carmella really is heeling on all cylinders. Also, is this leading to Asuka vs. Ellsworth? It could be fun, but we literally did that last year with Becky.
Straight Fire
I enjoyed every bit of this. Peyton and Billie are hilarious, and Becky won. This is all good stuff.
Oh, hey!
So Sanity DOES work here! Good to know! And they're heels again, I guess. Whatever, let's put these two teams in a fun gimmick match at Extreme Rules and let sparks fly.
Beatup Brothers
I really feel bad for the Good Brothers, who never seemed like a legit threat to the champs. Because they should.
Gauntlet, a play is 4 acts.
We need to talk about Samoa Joe. At some point, he's gotta win. You can't be a monster heel if all you do is lose. But right now, on this blessed Rusev Day, I mostly want to celebrate Rusev's win, which also happened on Rusev day. I am so glad for Rusev. I hope he stays a face, and that his team will be by his side.
205 Live
Ground vs. Flight part 1,000,000
So Gulak has now beaten every member of Lucha House Party in singles competition. So...? Where is this storyline going?
TJP beats up a jobber part 1,000,000
Again, this is a thing they've been doing for a while. Is it going anywhere?
Triple Awesome
Three really great workers worked a really great match, and the right guy won. Waiting for the upcoming Itami/Alexander feud.
NXT
This wasn't much of an episode, as most of it was dedicated to recapping TakeOver. I watched TakeOver already. We also got a couple of matches that were taped before Takeover.
Bianca Belair: Beast
Belair is a unique physical specimen. Like, at this point, I'm wondering if she's a mutant. She is ridiculously strong and unbelievably athletic. Dakota is a great wrestler, and this was a very solid match.
War Beats Mighty
The War Raiders are so impressive. I am very keen to see what these guys can do in a TakeOver match. They take the term "athletic big men" to new levels. The Mighty... well, they may not kneel, but they do job.
