Raising Tadpoles (Day 146) - Goodbye Marcinko
Day 146
After getting back to the house, I checked on both the frogs and tadpoles and found that Marcinko was struggling to swim. The poor little tadpole was floating sideways at the surface. After checking to see if Marcinko was still alive, I set about testing the water conditions and found nothing out of the ordinary. The water had an ammonia level 0ppm, a nitrite level of 0 ppm, and a PH level of 7.6. The water hardness was as I expected it to be as well, a carbonate hardness level of 125ppm and a general hardness level of 197ppm.
Since there was nothing that I could see immediately wrong with the water, I decided to transfer Marcinko over to the 10 gallon tadpole tank. I placed 0.5ml of Seachem Replenish into the carrier tank that I kept Marcinko in (0.5ml is the minimum measure the 3 ml pipette had). I was hoping to bring the water's general hardness up to 215ppm and then move Marcinko into the 10 gallon tank a few hours later in hope of as smooth a transition as possible to prevent stress but the 0.5ml of Replenish brought the water straight to 233ppm. Unfortunately, the plan didn't matter in the end as I found Marcinko had sunk to the bottom of the tank 2 hours later as I was preparing for the transfer to be completed. Perhaps the stress of surviving in the main tank for so long caused the poor fellow to be much more fragile than the other tadpoles or there was some other unknown factor. Regardless, Strangelove is now back to being the last tadpole that will metamorphosize out of this group. I wont be raising anymore tadpoles any time soon since I'm looking into moving within the next few months and two frogs are enough to deal with on their own during a move (fortunately, I never bothered to fully unpack everything).
Current Totals:
8 - 10 gallon (Tadpole Tank)
34 - 20 gallon (Frog Tank) [9 froglet, 25 juvenile]
