Day 147

I had a message left with the wholesaler and will wait to see when I hear back, I imagine that I'll have to wait until next Saturday, day 156, to transport the frogs to them. Regardless, I may do a weekly round up next Sunday, day 157, to give an update. It's still amazing to think that all of this started 147 days ago on the 26th of April, 2018 has been an interesting year.

It's recommended that African Clawed Frogs be given a standard 12 hours of daylight, 12 hours of darkness, though natural lighting will also work in most homes - just don't put the tank in direct sunlight. This has always been something that I've found interesting to consider over the years as the reasoning behind this recommendation is based on the standard light/darkness schedule recommended for pretty much every animal rather than being based on a scientific study. In fact, I've never been able to find a direct study covering the sleeping patterns of African Clawed Frogs. Not having any scientific paper to go on, I can only rely on my own direct observations over the years and knowledge of the sleeping patterns of other animals. Given the fact that I have seen the frogs up at all times of the day regardless of the lighting conditions, I have two hypotheses for what form African Clawed Frog sleeping patterns take:

  1. The frogs sleep in micro-sleep cycles without any equivalent of deep REM sleep, allowing them to appear to remain continuously active at all times, somewhat similar to ants.
  2. The frogs have active sleep cycles consisting of periods of partial brain activity similar to the sleep cycles of dolphins, who never truly sleep in the manner humans do but instead sleep by alternating the halves of their brains with one half resting and the other half remaining active for a period of several hours per day.

I'm personally partial to the second hypothesis, however, I'll have to wait for a study to be done to say anything for sure since it's entirely possible the real answer is an unlisted third option.

Current Totals:

8 - 10 gallon (Tadpole Tank)
34 - 20 gallon (Frog Tank) [9 froglet, 25 juvenile]
