#MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle - When the market is an excuse to let you know about another tradition of East Timor
Hi there, my dear Steemians!
Here is my post today to the #MarketFriday, initiated by my dear Denise <3!
I've been showing you, in the last couple of weeks on my #MarketFriday posts, one of the local markets of Díli, the capital of East Timor, the Taibessi Market :)).
As some of you are always interested in knowing more about the local traditions and culture, today the market is an excuse to let you know about another one. Come with me!
Timorese people, mostly the women, have always worked the most in the society. They are the main providers of their families. They work in the agriculture and in other heaviest activities.
So, since the ancient times, to forget the hunger and to get some extra energy, they chew a mixture of substances that provide them this (false) energy they need. They say this substance has hallucinogenic effects too. It's like a drug.
It's made of areca tree nut and lime and then wrapped in betel leaves. It's called "maska" (literally, chew) and women chew (and spit) it all day. It becomes red, and then their teeth also become red and eventually the lime ends up destroying them.
Here are some portraits where you can see some older women chewing maska, and its effects.
Thanks for the visit, Thanks, @dswigle, the sweet host of this wonderful challenge!
This is also my entry to the amazing Streetphotography by @photocontests and @juliank :)). Cheers to you too, my friend!
Photos taken by me.
Cheers to all! Have a wonderful Fridayyyyyy!

What a great collection of smiles! Excellent photos, Isabel! 😃
Thanks so much, Ricardo, it's wonderful you liked it! Cheers, my friend!
Thanks, my dear Pix!
Thank you. I wanted to know more about East Timor. Interesting! Everyone sells only maska?
I'm the one who is grateful, @bluemoon. No, they sell many more vegetables and stuff, but these ones only maska.
Understand, thank you!
good photo excellent
Thanks so much, @duque!
That is interesting! Not only the fact that they chew, but, why they have been driven to seek more energy. I had no idea that they were the drive in their families. It is different to choose it rather than have it thrust upon you.
On another note, in other countries, they chew the cocao bean etc.... but, I have not seen anything so damaging to the mouth as this! I often wonder if they (themselves) look at it in the same manner as we do, or is it just accepted that is what happens?
The people seem so genuinely happy with their life, no matter how hard, there is always a smile. So warming to my soul. Thank you for showing another aspect of East Timor. I love so much to learn about the culture of others.
You do the telling of your stories with your heart included. It is a wonderful trait to have as a photographer. Thank you for another wonderful post! Appreciate the time and energy spent doing this!
Much love. Upped and Steemed.
Tip!
Thanks my dear! You speak with your heart also, and you melt mine. They see themselves with some different eyes, I'm sure. And they are happy on their own way. Happier than we are, I guess, most of the times.
Thanks for your generosity, my dear Denise! Big hug and xoxo!
Tip!
I believe they are happy. At the very least, that is one blessing that life gives them. xo
Indeed! Should we be happy too with the things we have and they don't. Blessings, my dear Denise!
Absolutley!!
