Market Friday Goes to the Bookstore

in #marketfriday6 years ago (edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see so many different markets and the fascinating cultures.

market 5.JPG

I have been fortunate to have so many of you posting different markets from all over the world! I cannot tell you how fascinating it has been, sitting here, watching the world parade by. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

But first, a flower. Always a flower.

There must be an act of kindness and beauty that belongs to this day alone. Seize that moment and pass it on, pass it on and keep on passing it on.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

This week I went to a used bookstore In Old Town, during my #WednesdayWalk with @TattoedJay. See here It is a little different than most of the secondhand bookstores that I have been in. This is it. Step right around the corner and you're in!

Wednesday Walk 8.JPG

I like the way the buildings reflect in the bookstore windows. Oh, yes! I am all about the reflections.

Wednesday Walk 9.JPG

Once upon a time hits you right in the face. Brownie camera sitting on top of a stack of books, vintage posters, Candlestick telephones. I even saw an old singer sewing machine. I never even asked if they were for decoration or for sale, but, I will bet that they were there to set the stage for the books. I really liked the old license plates.

Market2.JPG

I must say that there are some very unusual things in here, but, I certainly feel like I stepped back in time. Very much implying that some aspect is similar to something that would have been common sometime in the past.

I breathe in the smell of history.

market 8.JPG

Old books are everywhere. I love the feel, the touch, the way they smell. I do love my kindle, but, nothing will replace the binding of a book and the words framed in between those pages.

market 12.JPG

The entire store is a haven of treasures.

Ribbet collage 2.jpg

A plain white ceiling hardly rates a cursory glance. But cover it with richly patterned metal panels, and instantly it becomes an eye-catching feature. As seen here

Market15.JPG

I have always loved books, they take me on an adventure, to another world, doing things I have never done, seeing things I have never seen.

What is your favorite book of all time?

What kind of books do you like to read?

market 13.JPG

As always, thank you for participating in #MarketFriday! The effort put into gathering and putting a post together is appreciated. Thank you for sharing your part of the world with all of us! Happy Friday! Have a wonderful weekend!

Love old books and reading and love the smell of the stores. I like the way you describe it - "I breathe in the smell of history." :)
I'm not currently reading any book...

I do love used books or books that have been given a second life. What better way to share than to share knowledge, even fiction carries a certain amount, even if only in writing or grammar. I love that there is a lesson there somewhere.

I like all kinds of books and just finished Agatha Christies The Man in the Brown Suit but almost any genre will be picked up and read. I am so tired at night, I have been lacking my reading time, but, someday, I dream of reading a book during daytime hours. :)

Thanks for the visit!

Tip!

Haha, yes I get sleepy at night if I try to read!

I have no idea what happened to me! I used to read for hours at night. Now, my head hits the pillow and I am gone. At least I believe it waits that long!

Hi @violetmed! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

They sure have a nice collection of vintage items.

All one needs to know about life can be learned from Mark Twain. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is foundational.

Here is my link.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to put together a post for #MarketFriday. Oh, under the wire (barely!) again!

What did I learn from the book of Huckleberry Finn? I can say that I learned the value of friendship and I should always use those same values to make decisions... ones that should be based on my heart, not always what is in my head.

And more, but, that is for another day and another post. And my, oh, my! What an incredible shot with rays of shine breaking through the frame of clouds. Majestic.

Tip!

Yes I really like your take away on that. I would only add to follow your heart regardless what society and even those around you think. The culture and people were wrong.

I always enjoyed MF even though it is by far the hardest challenge around. I am sure I will continue to do it now and again ;)

Much obliged for the tip.

I like the smell of books, I like the smell of the library. I think I feel the smell of this bookstore you show us on today's market. It looks more like an antique shop ... I like a lot of these stores. You have tied the market today very nicely to your walk on Wednesday! Flower photos are gorgeous!

I also like the smell of lubraries. I worked at a library for many years, and was always grateful for my job there. It was so nice to come home smelling of books, and not take out fast food like if I may have worked somewhere else.

Thanks! You are the best able to confirm this.

Hi, Dan! Somehow, I knew you would love books and their smell. You are so right, it does look more like an antique shop than a bookstore, but, I think the man was trying to infuse a sense of history and adventure, much like some of the books we read.

At least, that is the way I interpret it. :)

Hehe... I did tie the two post together a little. It was so obvious that this bookstore needed to be done, especially after going in it the first time, many moons ago. I have no idea why I haven't used it yet. But, another one to cross off the list. Thank goodness I will be going on vacation next week so I can bring a new Market this way.

Thank you for stopping by #MarketFriday and your always generous comments. We must have flowers, yes! :)

Tip!

My pleasure, you know! Now when I feel a little interest here... almost the only pleasure is this exchange of comments with the people we like. I wish you a pleasant vacation and come back with a lot of topics!

Hi @bluemoon! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

Hi, sweetie, I couldn't make this week for #MarketFriday, I guess it's one of the few, if any, times I missed it! But I've enjoyed seeing the markets of the world, and loved your post! I too love the smell of old books and the atmosphere of them, and sometimes the mystery around them. Whom have they belonged? Whose hands have touched them, which thoughts and ideas have they given to those who have read them? Have them made they cry, or smile? Here in ET, as there are no libraries and the bookshops are not worthy of the name, we struggle to get some reading. So some bars have a bring one, get one bookshelf of books and those are the ones I'm reading for a while. Some of them even have dedicatories, or are underlined, and I always wonder how they may have influenced those who have read them... "your" bookshop is wonderful and I loved the way you shared it! About my favorite book, I don't know where to start... But I really love the classics, and the one that comes to my mind is "The little women".
So, as I haven't made my post, here is one of my market favorite photo ever! It's a women at the floating market in Can Tho, Vietnam, at the Mekong delta! she was selling delicious pineapples!
This one I dedicate to you! Big hug and xoxo, my dear Denise! Resteemed!

best bw1.jpg

How sweet of you!! You know I love the Mekong Delta and this is a wonderful shot, especially with the brim of her rice hat (I always remember them being referred to as coolie hats)

I have always appreciated the fact that you never miss #MarketFriday and even this week you come over to peruse! Yay! Thank you for being so kind and caring.

I feel the same way about books and I have always loved when I get a book underlined and little footnotes. I got a bible like that at a secondhand store and was fascinated by what this person found notable. I have bought many new books, but, the used ones usually rate #1 with me. I like to give new life.

Indeed. Little Women! Laura Ingalls Little House on the Prarie rated right up there too and Anne of Green Gables. I bet you liked Jo!!! ;)

I did, she was my favorite, yes! You know me well by now, sweetie! Thanks for your wonderful words, as always, my dear Denise! I'm truly happy to have you in my inner circle on Steemit! Big hug to you, luv!

I actually really like how the books are sitting in the window like that too! I just got back into reading a lot again so I probably would’ve loved to be there :).

Thank you. The sun was pretty high in the sky, so I knew I was going to get a reflection, but, it was not a disappointment. Reading has always been a great adventure for me, ever since I was a little kid. I loved my time when I could curl up and travel to places unknown.

If you love reading, secondhand bookstores are a great place. I love the thought of giving another life to a book. What are you currently reading? I am in between books, but, just finished The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie. Good to see you back again and thank you for visiting #MarketFriday!

Tip!

My local library has been taking care of me really nicely so far! Maybe one day I’ll want to buy to start a small Home library of my own though.

Currently reading a collection of short stories titled “The Largesse of the Sea Maiden” by Denis Johnson. All the stories have been great and feature reflection of mortality and deeper meaning. Idk seems morbid but I’ve enjoyed it!

Posted using Partiko iOS

I am in the process of having a neighborhood library box built so that everyone can take a book, leave a book and the books can live on through many hands. I love the concept - whoever started it.

No judgment here, mortality is a very real thing and I love books that have deeper meanings within their bindings. Thank you again and I don't mind not having too big a library, I just keep passing them on for others to enjoy!

Yes! The library box would work perfect. We actually have a few of those along a walking trail at my school and it works great!

Posted using Partiko iOS

They do! I love them and always make sure to pop a new one in the box. Or two. One for a kid and one for an adult.

I love book stores! The finds can be fascinating. One of my all time favorite books is Jane Eyre and another is Gone With the Wind.

There is just something about bookstores! Always has been and yes! The finds can be quite amazing. It is a place I can walk in blindfolded and know exactly where I am.

Jane Eyre and Gone with the Wind. I want you to know that doesn't surprise me one bit. I sort of knew that about you and honestly both of those were all-time favorites although I have become somewhat eclectic over the years. I still enjoy curling up to a great book, losing myself in another place and time. (whenever there Is time!)

Thanks for visiting #MarketFriday, and I hope you have a most fabulous weekend!

Hi @wandrnrose7! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @dswigle!

Looks like a nice mom and pop bookstore those are getting harder to find. The more corporate and large ones I find rather boring to even enter these days. They seem so keen on upselling you on membership cards, and a bunch of things you just don’t care for. Must have been a year since I’ve step inside one.

I do love science and science fiction books. It has been a while since I’ve gone out and tried to find anything new.

I’ve been very slowly reading a book called Electric Universe. I only pick up once in a while and read a page or two of it. Shockley I’m only on page 104 for owning it for a few months now. I do enough reading these days it seems I just lack much interested in doing more of ii.

It is a great store and yes! They are getting harder and harder to find. We still have plenty of them around here, surprisingly. My entire family loves science, math and medicine and aerodynamics. Weird crew. :)

I have never heard of Electric Universe but, now I am going to have to look it up. I think the internet has really damaged the book industry. I still love to curl up and read, which I usually do every night before I go to bed. I don't like to stimulate my poor brain any more than it already is by staying on the internet until I drop off. It took training though! :)

Big box stores hold no fascination for me either, but, now and again I do have to darken their doors. Thanks for always stopping by. It is surely appreciated!

I do enjoy the sensation of holding and smelling a physical book. I see people use e-book readers and such and it just feels like there no heart to such a device. I can understand not everyone has the room for real books and I’m sure they are really cheap and just 1 click away.

Have a wonderful week!

I agree!

You have a fabulous one!

Once upon a time hits you right in the face....beautiful words. I love this type of bookstore. Book already allow you to travel, to another country, time, culture. But this type of bookstore in itself is an adventure! Lovely @dswigle . My favourite books are the type that take you back in time. I love the old west settings but also the old fashioned Dickens and Gaskell or Bronte sisters. Currently working my way through Agatha Christie!

Thank you! It is always what I feel like when I go into a bookstore, there is a story inside...somewhere. I love used books, I can only imagine how many minds have traveled places within those pages. Of course, I also loved Borders and it was a sad day in my life when they shuttered those doors, forever closing off my couch and coffee mecca.

But, the settings here only enhance my already running mind. Agatha Christie! Oh, yes. I just finished reading The Man in the Brown Suit There are so many brilliant stories written! Thank you for visiting #MarketFriday!

Tip!

Borders closed?! Why! When I lived in the States I bought a LOT of books. I had to then pay a LOT when I returned to SA with all my books. Then I lived in England for a few years and visited their wonderful second hand book stores....and bought a LOT of books....

I meant the Borders that was a new bookstore. They closed a few years back as Amazon took over and Borders had turned them down years ago to be their supplier/shipper. So when the world went shopping online, many of the stores like that shut their doors, sdly.

I miss my place on their couch, by the fireplace, sipping a cappuccino with my words.

Sigh.

So is it South Africa for good now? I have traveled since I left college and can honestly say that life is a wonderful adventure!

Life is a wonderful adventure @dswigle. I can't say I don't get the wanderlust every now and then. But my husband and I would love to buy a tiny home on wheels and travel that way. Something really unique and doable with children. So, yes, SA for good, for now, but if you're following the news (what may leak out) things are really bad here at the moment. I am not a fan of politics but there's no denying the white genocide in this beautiful country. I wrote my last post about it, simply because I feel that the world at large is oblivious of the truth

I did read your last post, but, I went back and looked and there is no comment, so it is most likely when steem isn't working. Usually, that is during #MarketFriday! :)

Things are not good there and I have friends that live there also. Oh, how things have changed there. The leaks are little, but, I get government warnings on places that are verboten. I can liken it to when one of the former Soviet countries was having the same issue and the world turned a blind eye.

Totally disgusting. Please take great care and stay safe.

It is totally disgusting! But you are right about leaks being verboten. Thank you @dswigle

Thank you for such lovely flowers!! I love seeing your picture at the end of your posts!! 😍

This definitely took me back in time and I’m glad you allowed us to come with you. I love seeing old books and gadgets so this post was a real treat! Hopefully I will get to share with you all for #marketfriday next week! We went to a state fair and got to see some fun items!! 😉

Great job on your #markerfriday initiative! It took off really well~ ❤️

You are so sweet! Thank you! I love perusing second-hand bookstores, especially ones like this, where they are an adventure just walking through the door. Do you have a favorite author or is it even possible you have time to read?

I would be very excited to see the State Fair! It is getting to be that time of year, isn't it? They are always so much fun and I look forward to it if you have the time!

Thank you so much for the visit and I hope that all is well in your wonderful world. ❤️

Tip!

You are very welcome ~

Haaa the most reading I get to do seems to be right here on Steemit!! I currently do not have a favorite author. I tend to read books centered around family and marriage when I get the chance.

Oh yes I love going to state fairs!! I will definitely try to make time this week to share.

All is well here, thank you!! I appreciate the tip! 💗

Mwah!! The pleasure is always mine! 💗
