Thirty Days

in #life5 years ago (edited)

One month from today I’ll be on a plane to Paris. The thirty-day point is significant. It means I’m running out of time to get everything done that I need to get done, like placing all the dogs, and selling the property.

Anybody want to buy some cheap land in Appalachia?

Today Colleena (@arrelaine13) and I have been on the road for nearly twenty-four hours. We drove in shifts, taking turns sleeping, and stopping every six hours or less to walk the dogs and offer them refreshments. They all seemed to ride more comfortably than I had hoped for such tight quarters. This was not an ideal transport, but it was legal and safe. The good news? We got them all to Vermont safely and without issues.

Our route took us from Birmingham to Chattanooga, then to Knoxville, Tennessee. We caught I-81 through Bristol, Wytheville, Roanoke, Winchester, parts of West Virginia and Maryland near Hagerstown, and into Pennsylvania. We rolled through Binghamton, New York, Schenactedy, and onward into New England on various tiny two-lane highways that were scenic, but gosh-awful slow.

In Middlesex, the adopters (and one foster, for Fred,) met us at the volunteer fire and rescue station where we could unload the dogs safely and out of the rain. Here’s how that looked!

Now that the Stranded Seven are all safely with their families, Colleena and I will take a much-needed break from driving and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a thirteen-hour haul back to Virginia, so probably no post until the next day, if then. However, this was a great way to burn three days of the countdown--doing good for some doggos in need. See you next time!
