Hola mis Steemians

To finish my series about the national parks in the Dominican Republic, today we travel all the way to the southwest until we reach the border to Haiti in the

National Park/Parque national Sierra Bahoruco

Here in the no man's land of the island, we visit one of the most fascinating areas of the country. Due to its special landscape, the Sierra Bahoruco National Park is an absolute hotspot for nature and animal lovers and for those of you who are interested in the fascinating history of the Dominican Republic. For me this park is an absolute must for eco- and hiking tourists. I am sure our @faltermann would have his true joy here...

The national park Sierra de Bahoruco offers a breathtaking variety of fauna and flora and fauna on an area of about 1.000 km². More than 1500 plant species can be found here, of which about 450 are endemic species, which can only be found here. The reason for this diversity is assumed to be the different altitudes at which the park is located. The area in Aguacate near the border to Haiti rises up to about 2'300 meters.

Hoyo de Pelempito

A gigantic earth funnel, which constitutes the absolute highlight of this national park. It is located in an approximately 7 kilometers long and 700 meters deep valley. This is located in the middle of the mountains at an altitude of about 1,500 meters. Here, extremely rare plants grow and thrive on an area of 18 km² due to the very special microclimate. And at the bottom of the Hoyo live various animal species, among them

  • wild boars
  • horses
  • or also different kinds of birds

Here you can enjoy the silence and the vastness.

Unique natural diversity in the Sierra Bahoruco National Park

You will not find a greater variety of landscapes in the whole Dominican Republic than in the Sierra Bahoruco National Park. It is absolutely unique, unique and nothing to compare with. Everything that nature has to offer you can expect here:

  • Jungle and tropical rainforest
  • dry mountain forest
  • barren steppe
  • giant watercourses
  • a rich ecosystem

The park is especially famous for its numerous orchid species.
The west of the national park is rich in gypsum, salt and bauxite - here you can find Larimar and Black Jade, two very special gemstones.

Plantations and mountain people

On an exciting voyage of discovery you will discover here:

  • the moving history of the Dominican Republic
  • the local mountain tribes very closely
  • large coffee plantations and various fruit plantations

And if you want to refresh yourself, there are numerous and dreamlike rivers to cool you down. You can then enjoy the peace and nature in a unique way.

Thanks for the valuable information about this park. It really seems to have the 50 shades of green. It looks like a vast area, Did you explore all of this in one day or did you have overnight sleep in a tent or a hut or something (even though you said no man's land).

Greetings from Cape Town :)

mostly i took 2 or 3 days for visit the area, cause the distances are very fare from the capital Santo Domingo (5-7 hours drive). I spent often times in smaller hotels.
