Simply fantastic - National Park "del Este" - Dominican Republic

From the Parque National "Los Haitises" in the east over the Parque National "Jaragua" in the southwest, today we visit together the Parque National "del Este" in the extreme southeast of the Dominican Republic.

The National Park "del Este

was founded in 1975. It belongs to the rather smaller of the 13 designated national parks of the Dominican Republic. It covers a total area of about 400 km² and stretches between Bayahibe in the west and Boca de Yuma in the east. Guides are available in both cities to give you access to the park.

The largest semi-dry forest in the Caribbean

is located here in the Parque Nacional del Este and the soil consists mainly of coral limestone. There are large mangrove forests, various limestone caves, fantastic beaches and beautiful underwater worlds that stretch as far as Isla Catalinita, Isla Saona and Laguna los Flamencos. Access to the National Park is only granted when accompanied by a local guide.

Wildlife in the National Park

In the larger part of the Parque National Del Este, located on the mainland, you can observe countless animals such as herons, pelicans, frigate birds, the rhinoceros iguana and various species of turtles. Especially interesting for lovers of history among you are the remains of the Taínos. In different caves you can discover their signs. The caves/Cuevas José María and Cueva del Puente are particularly impressive.

Snorkel lovers among you,

find in the area between the southern peninsula and the island Saona, in the Canal Catuano fantastic conditions, since the water here is only three to four meters deep and the many corals are largely untouched.

Conclusion

Despite its small size, the National Park del Este is a wonderful destination for a day trip. I was particularly impressed by the density of different animal species that can be observed in some places from a very short distance. Moreover, the Parque del Este can be optimally combined with a visit of one of the most beautiful islands in the Dominican Republic, the Isla Saona.
