Simply fantastic - National Park Monte Cristi - Dominican Republic

With the Parque national "Nalga de Maco" we have already reached the Haitian border. We stay there, but travel all the way to the northwest of the Dominican Republic to the north coast. There we visit together the national park Monte Cristi.

The landmark of this national park is the Table Mountain El Morro in the extreme northwest of the Dominican Republic. The protected area extends over an area of about 550 km² and consists mainly of the sea and beautiful coastal lagoons. Further seven small offshore islands belong to the national park - the "Cayos Siete Hermanos".

Finest sandy beaches and absolutely ideal conditions for snorkelling attract many tourists to the pretty islands. Those of you who prefer to go on foot should climb the mountain "El Morro". With its height of about 300 meters it is rather a hill and you definitely don't have to be an experienced climber - stairs lead the steep way up to the top. At the top you will be rewarded with a wonderful view up to the sea.

Otherwise, the landscape in the national park is mostly flat and is characterized by the estuary delta of the three rivers Río Yaque del Norte, Río Chacuey and Río Masacre. Therefore, the park landscape mainly consists of a very dense mangrove jungle in which many animals are hidden.

Yes, the heart of the animal lover beats definitely higher in the Parque Nacional Monte Cristi. Here there is a versatile fauna to discover. In addition to many amphibians and molluscs, you can admire many bird species, including rare specimens. These include for example

• the Cayenne Night Heron
• the Great White Egret
• the Red-footed Booby
• and the rabbit owl

Also in the water many animals cavort, for example the Caribbean sea cow (Nagelmanatí) and many crustaceans are frequently represented here.

Conclusion

Another beautiful national park for the joy of nature. It is by far not as quiet as the parks in the mountains, but it offers a unique highlight to snorkel lovers.
