Simply fantastic - National Park "Nalga de Maco" - Dominican Republic

After having visited the national park "Armando Bermúdez" in the central mountains yesterday, we stay today in the area of this mountain range and head a little more northwest to the Haitian border.

There we find the next national park, which I want to introduce to you in my series about protected areas in the Dominican Republic. But my last visit here was a good 2 years ago, because it is relatively difficult to reach. But I'll tell you more about that later.

The Parque Nacional Nalga de Maco

is a completely protected park in the extreme west of the Cordillera Central mountain range and covers a total area of around 280 square kilometres. This makes it one of the smaller national parks on the island.

The unique nature

This park is especially known for its lively, beautiful and unique landscape, where you can observe a great variety of birds - not least because of the pleasant temperatures that prevail here.

The impressive landscape

of the park, with its waterfalls and wild streams, always offers magnificent photo motifs. In the north the park borders on the municipality of Los Almácigos (Santiago Rodríguez region), in the west on the municipality of Restauración (Dajabón province - Haitian border) and in the east on the already visited Armando Bermúdez National Park. The best way to reach the park is to visit the municipality of Río Limpio.

The journey is a little bit long

and from Santo Domingo it is best to follow the route: Santiago de los Caballeros - Mao - Santiago Rodríguez - Loma de Cabrera - Restauración to finally reach Río Limpio. And if you then want to get from Río Limpio to the ridge of Nalga de Maco, you either have to continue on foot or rent a mule or a horse (which I recommend, walking is long and impassable).

However, you have to actually cover a small part of the route on foot. And so you need about two days for the whole way. You can also visit the beautiful stalactite cave of Sidra at the same time.

Conclusion

For nature lovers who walk well - an absolute highlight. Isolated from the outside world you will find pure nature here.
