I'm staying in one of the many wildlife conservancies that border the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya. For the next couple weeks I'm going to try and post each evening from The Naboisho Conservancy.

BIRDS OF THE MAASAI MARA

We saw a buffalo with a red billed ox pecker on its face. This bird actually lives on this particular buffalo, or a few of them for its entire life! The birds eat bacteria out of any of the buffalos wounds and generally they are providing a welcome service killing and eating parasites.

The bird is not an annoyance for the buffalo and the interaction is just part of the ecosystem. The birds can also be seen living on Giraffes and other big antelopes too.

We also saw two Topi a species of antelope that people say are 'wearing jeans' because of the colour of their lower legs.

Roller Bird

I was really lucky to see a lilac breasted roller which is one of the most famous birds in Africa. It perches on the end of one single branch proudly. They are very territorial and dominant, so when you see one you'll probably notice there are no other birds around - they can get quite aggressive over their territory.

They are called rollers because they roll in the air to show off their colours - they are very proud dominant birds and definitely a favourite among bird watchers here.
