SJW Cringe

in #informationwar5 years ago

I must first make clear that I love women. All of them. Well, almost all of them... But what I mean to say is that nothing in this post is aimed at any of my crypto-sisters in particular or in general. What follows is just an observation of how politics and the economy are influencing pop culture in a very negative way.

The fact that we live in a climate where I feel the need to make a disclaimer like this, before talking about the new Batwoman trailer, is a reflection of how political correctness has come to dominate the public sphere as well as our culture. Now here's a disclaimer I would make in any climate; we're talking about a trailer here and final "judgment" will have to wait until we see the finished product, a new TV series about Batwoman. Another disclaimer: we're also talking about my favorite superhero, Batman, so I'm certainly not unbiased when I say what I'm about to say...

It seems that once again respect for the source-material and any semblance of decent storytelling have been sacrificed on the altar of political correctness, SJW-style. Never before have I seen such blatant virtue-signalling as in this concentrated bundle of epic fail, which is quite a feat to pull off after the likes of Ghostbusters 2016, Star Trek Discovery, the new Doctor Who and Brie Larson's portrayal of Captain Marvel in the MCU have already been criticized for prioritizing social justice messaging over quality screenplays, believable characters and sensible dialogue. The politically motivated wish for the depiction of "strong female characters" even results in the destruction of all-time fan favorites like Luke Skywalker, who's character was assassinated for the sole purpose of letting the new female lead shine a little brighter.

Let me remind you; no one on God's green earth is against strong female heroes, they've been among us for many decades now and will always be. It's also clear that political messaging has ALWAYS been a part of storytelling in books, films and series; it's common practice that writers incorporate some form of social and political commentary in their work. I mean, if you can't see how George Lucas was influenced by the Bush administration when he made the prequel trilogy... That's all fine, as long as it's not "in your face" and as long as it's not detrimental to the actual story itself, as long as the message is contained within a coherent story-line with believable characters. And this is where all these failed attempts at heavy virtue-signalling get it wrong.

What's your Superpowers again??I'm RICH [HD]

Batman is my favorite superhero because he looks bad-ass and because he has no real superpowers; he's just a dude with a lot of money and wonderful gadgets who refuses to kill. That's how I know Batman, and like Luke Skywalker and every other believable superhero in human history, he had to walk a difficult path full of adversity, had to be beaten down first before he could rise above himself and become more than just a man, a symbol of hope for the people of Gotham City and a herald of fear for it's criminals. At the end of Batman Begins commissioner Gordon thanks Batman for saving the city and in his answer Batman reveals another classic heroes trope: "You don't have to thank me. And you never will." Heroes are selfless, they don't do their good deeds for personal recognition of any kind; they're the ones to just do what they know is the right thing to do, even if it means giving up their reputation.

And like all female heroes in recent memory, Batwoman doesn't meet any of these criteria. In the trailer a good friend of Kate Kane, the character that's to become Batwoman, is kidnapped. She is a lucky girl though, because she's Bruce Wayne's niece, and Batman hasn't been seen in a while. So she breaks in at Wayne Enterprises and discovers that her uncle is Batman! The security guard can't stop her from descending into the Bat-cave where she discovers Batman's suit, and here the cringe begins... She says to the guard that she needs him to fix the suit. Wait... What? The guard tells her that the suit doesn't need fixing, and that it's literal perfection. Kate answers: "It will be when it fits a woman." Aarghh...

So, she gets the suit and all the gadgets for free, no price paid, no effort or time taken, entitlement is enough... I'm his niece so I obviously have a right to all this, so you'd better get to work my dear fellow. She takes the suit, and goes out to rescue her friend, but some little girl points at her and calls out: "Look! It's Batman!" And in the next scene Kate says "They think I'm Batman," followed by "I'm not about to let a man take credit for a woman's work." ...!!! WTF!!! All the while we hear a song in the background with the lyric "I'm a woman." And then we see Kate in a fully "feminized" Bat-suit with bright red accents to go with her luscious new bright red hairdo... Really? Is this a hero we're supposed to care about? She's clearly in it for personal reasons and personal fame. She clearly didn't do anything at all to deserve the title of superhero, she just stole the name, the image and the stuff from a man, and she doesn't fancy giving that man any of the credits for "her" work. I'll stop here, but there's so much more wrong with this. Watch it for yourself:
