Human Shields
The test of a civilization is in the way that it cares for its helpless members.
The catastrophe for India's neighbor never ends. After India's invasion and occupation, they are now used as human shields. The Naga indigenous have been divided into Myanmar and India occupied areas. Inside India, they are further bifurcated or atomized into four Indian states, namely, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. This was done in order to weaken the already weak & afflicted.
It is misleading to think that Naga indigenous have been given their own state inside India, because out of nearly 45 tribes, only 16 tribes have been granted their own state, whereas the vast majority of the Naga tribes have been fragmented into the aforementioned states.
The worst affected among the Naga indigenous are those who have the misfortune of their land being occupied by Manipur. In Manipur, besides the military and political warfare, the majority Hindu community has been relentlessly inflicting one catastrophe after another against the largely Christian Naga indigenous. Tamenglong District, the homeland of the Rongmei Nagas, has been sliced into more neglible pieces in 2016. Nungba was under the jurisdiction of the Tamenglong district, until the creation of Noney district in November, 2016, by former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
Tazeipkaiphun, a village under Nungba subdivision of the newly created Noney district, is poorly connected to the nearest town by a treacherous and muddied seven-kilometre path that you have to walk on foot, if not in one of their custom jeeps. On the morning of May 22, 2018, a military chopper and a military controlled drone hovered in circle in the sky above the village. Next day, in the morning, the Commanding Officer of 23 Assam Rifles showed up and demanded to be taken to a hideout of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah).
The Commanding Officer threatened Village Chairman Kamphuna Kamei and the latter was used as a human shield for the whole day by the search party only to find nothing – the insurgents have left in advance. Had there been a gun battle, he would have been exposed to flying bullets. This is just one example of the daily intimidation and harassment.
The use of human shields is a violation of India’s national and international human rights commitments, including the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT).
