I Gots Me A Green Eggy! - ColorChallenge: ThursdayGreen

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)
So, every day, I spend a lot of time excitedly waiting for my chickens to lay their daily eggs! I end up sitting on the back deck, and just enjoying the back yard, property, sunshine, and even more. It's getting me outside more, for sure. However, it probably bugs the crap out of them, but I love it! I hope it doesn't get old!

I guess if it does ever get old, I will just have to get some more chickens that lay even different colored eggs. Ha.

Today I really appreciated one of my Easter Egger's green eggs! I actually didn't really think I'd be getting green eggs from them! I thought they'd be blue, even though, I had read that the color of their legs can indicate what color Egg they lay (indicative of Easter Eggers from what I understand).... but you can only take stuff like that with a grain of salt. Now I do wish that I had a picture of their green legs!

There's just something so spectacular about this green egg I got today. I can't even give it words on how much these little eggs give me joy!

I am really happy that I am getting green eggs! I was really wanting some Olive Egger chickens. I ended up not getting them this year, but they were still on my wish list for maybe next year. But, here I get these light olive green eggs, and they're just wonderful. Such a pleasant surprise!

In other news, today is husband's birthday. Some things didn't go as planned but we did go to a new Mexican Restaurant to get some food to go. The experience at the place was really awesome. The gal who took our order was hilarious, I really enjoyed her. Haha, I think I will go back just for more interaction with her! Haha. I just had the traditional-type tacos, and I think because it was the end of the evening, they were... less than optimal, but I am willing to give them another go!

Ugh, you guys, I think I am allergic to a candy... Maybe. I have narrowed it down (or what I am hoping it is??) to either this candy I have been gorging OR changing my make up color to a darker shade (it's sunny here - I tan quick! lol). So, I don't even know. The candy is basically gone, so, there's that. But, the make up... It's heartbreaking! I don't want to have to find a different brand. Really frustrating. But I have been feeling the urge to find an organic or at least a more natural make up... I don't know. Ugh. My face is SO ITCHY. And kind of puffy today. :(

Now you just need some green ham!

Would you eat green ham?? Kind of scary if you ask me! Haha

It may taste and smell a lil' funny, but I'm sure its harmless

OH NO THANK YOU! Hahaha. Oh that reminds me, I once bought this real nice pork loin, it was bad. I was so mad when I opened it. Oh boy did it STINK.

very very weird! hahaha thanks for sharing!

Chickens can lay all kinds of colors of eggs!! :) It's so cool!

wow, I learn a new thing today, yeah it is really cool!

Lol would you like green eggs and ham ? I have to show my son this egg I didn't think it was possible. My eye was so itchy the other day and I was sad was thinking it was my new mascara l. I wear contacts so it was terrible. I took an allergy pill and made it feel better but the. A couple days later again and I was wearing no mascara I think for me it is seasonal allergies

Chickens can lay all kinds of colors of eggs! It's pretty cool! Depending on their breed! :D

I recently got fascinated by olive eggers, I'd never seen the dark green eggs before. One thing I'm considering at my new place, is to breed olive eggers. People are paying $40 for a olive egger pullet around here.

If you mated the hen that laid that light green egg with a rooster from a breed that lays dark brown eggs, you'll get olive eggers. I thought that was so cool when I learned it. Marans and Welsummer are the two dark brown egg laying breeds often mated with easter eggers or Aracaunas, and the 2nd generation will be dark olive egg producers. Or so they say, I want to try it myself someday.

Anyway, sorry for that chicken rant, I love talking about chickens. Great Post, thanks!

I've been thinking about it myself!! I have an EE roo, and wellsummer hens! Haha maybe I should hatch some of their eggs to see if I'll get Olive Eggers whenever they start laying!

I love talking chickens! Haha keep it up!

I am interesting in breeding also. However, I was slightly detered at the thought of breeding for egg color cause that's a very very long project!!

Cool, another new social media service to learn, lol. I'll give it a try, thanks.

Yes, its 5-6 months from birth before they start laying, and then the 2nd generation is 5-6 months after that, so a full year. Gotta be in it for the long haul, for sure. Just something else that I find cool about chickens. I'm also considering just sticking with one heritage breed and trying to help preserve that breed for the future. Then again, I also want one of every breed. Ugh, so much fun to be had its hard to decide :)

Man, we are on the SAME!!!! Wavelength! I have three blue langshans pullets and one bantam blue langshans roo. I think imma breed them! I love heritage breeds! I have also four IDIOT salmon Faverolles. Man they are DUMB. haha but they are really cool!

I have been breed in olive Eggers for three years now with some awesome variations in color! I use Marans roo and different shades of blue and green egg layers. Some real pretty results!

Maybe you'll get some of those cool speckled ones too!

My cuckoo Marans are still figuring stuff out. Their eggs are kind of speckled! My welsummers might lay speckled, you just never know! Eeeek! It's all too exciting!

Too cool. You've had some neat egg experiences so far. Like the double yolker....you might get a rainbow colored egg next. Lol jk :)

Here's a bunch of my eggs right now! And my dog's nose. Lol

I like that dark brown one!

Way to go! Your chickens really do love you to give you a green egg! LOL! Is that why you wore a green shirt too? LOL! :) Allergic to candy? You poor thing. You are like me now...blowing up. Really, I sure hope you have narrowed it down. Congrats again on your green egg! :)

I sent you. A pic of my face on chat. :( without any make up.

Totally did not do the green shirt on purpose! Hahaha

Is it the colour of the feet that determines the egg colour I always thought it was the ears??

Like I said, you have to take all that with a grain of salt cause it's never right 100% of the time.

That's awesome, I've always been fond of getting green eggs from farmers when they have 'em. I could even swear they taste different... better... somehow!

Hahah I haven't noticed that! But home eggs are way better than store eggs! Haha

Dear tell me what kind of food, natural food do you give to your hen because i am a little hen and i give food only corn to eat, and they do not give me eggs during 6 months i have a chicken with them, around 20 days i bough some dietary food specially for hen and they star to give me eggs but i have a question, do you know a plant or a natural food for hen. If you know tell me please
Best regard.

Hey man! I will try to help the best I can... how old are you chickens? It takes 6 months after being born for them to start laying eggs.

Corn is not good for them, especially in the heat.

I feed mine organic chicken feed that I buy, I don't know where you're located so I don't know what they sell for you there.

My chickens also free range on my 20 acres. Eating whatever suits them.

I can't help you much because I don't know where you live and what's available there. You can grow things for them also. Like planting and growing some barley seed.

Thanks ok our chickens and hen are one yeard old but they do not put eggs
During this time but you have reason we only give corn for eat
We are in El Salvador Central America and. in my case we have around 2 hectareas, but i prepared a closed space to controller better and in this little space we have only 6 hen as an experiment, we only prepared corn we do not grown up barley seeds, here it is not posible i will try with sorgo that it is other grains.
Ok thanks for your response
I hope it would be better than industrial food that i try the last day with corn but i think maybe exist a plant natural that help our hen for give us a lot of eggs.
Thanks a lot.

You can definitely grow and feed grains to them. But they need protein very badly along with calcium supplemented - also be sure to provide grit if you can. If you can find something like this locally? Chicken forage seed, maybe! It also lists what seeds are in there, maybe you can find those!

In the winter time, is there a lot less light? Once there's less than 14 hours of light a day, they may start also laying less.

Thank you so much i find the list of food for trying to get eggs directly, of our hen, do you say the hen sleep early, in our case it sleep around from 6pm to 6 am of the next day. I try to do more light
Thank for the information i appreciate for be better cuality of life to be producer our own food.
Take care best regard.
