Traditional Croatian Carnival Masks From Veli brgud
This is already the 9th post about this year's Croatian traditional carnival gathering parade which took place in Matulji, Croatia. In last 9 posts I have presented 9 different Croatian traditional carnival bell-carrier groups & only 1 I made as an entry to portrait photo challenge. Veli brgud is a small village in the slopes of Ćićarija mountain approximately halfway between the Adriatic sea & Croatian-Slovenian border. It is a highly traditional village where people cherish their customs.
Some bell-carriers really are proud of their carnival role & also like to pose for photographers...
Young masked girls come 1st carrying the sign with the name of the groups & behind them you can see very young boys & children following.
After children the grown-ups follow
It's nice to see children participating in this activity cause with them this tradition will survive!
I really like to be able to achieve these kind of in-depth-photos where the 3rd dimension can be seen.
After the group showing off to the public & "zvončarsko kolo" many seek a bit of refreshment & kind of "fuel" to be able to continue their activities & every groups have a guy who is carrying the vine & brandy & sharing it among the members.
As usual, the members of this group, same like every other, are very strong men.
& some of them are still boys but promising to become big boys!
Similar to other bell-carrier groups, members of this one also carry the very similar outfit/uniform: long white trousers, dark shoes, tartan shirts, red & flowers scarf, a special hand-made hat which is also red & full of flowers. They all carry also a symbolic weapon of choice whish the call mačuga,
All the upper shots I made with Nikon D800 & Sigma 105 mm 1:2.8 DG Macro HSM lens & for the self-portrait below I used the same camera but different lens - Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70 mm.
In the next few days I will be publishing photos from other bell-carrier groups cause all of them have a different uniform which is really interesting to see.
