the winter transfer window ended on Monday 1 February at 8pm, when the doors of the Sheraton Hotel in Milan were closed, as usual on time, by the staff. As one might expect, the session did not feature any big names, due to the limited finances available to the clubs, which on many occasions had to resort to loans or the creativity of their managers to engage in negotiations centred on exchanges.
Some interesting names have joined the big family of Italian football, such as midfielders Kovalenko and Mæhle, bought from Atalanta, the interesting young forward Zirkzee, on loan to Parma from Bayern Munich (rumoured to be of interest to Juventus), or the strong American full-back Bryan Reynolds, who made his mark in the MLS and who has found his new home in Rome, on the Giallorossi side.
And if only AC Milan seems to have strengthened its position among the three big northern teams, with the signing of valuable players such as Mario Mandzukic or the young Anglo-Canadian Fikayo Tomori, the record for expenditure belongs to Juventus, who, despite not having signed the striker that the fans were clamouring for, have made a series of purchases of young players destined to be temporarily included in youth teams, or to be left, as in the case of Rovella, to mature in their current teams.
The date of 1 February has therefore launched on the Italian football table the classic warning heard by croupiers in casinos around the world: "Les jeux sont fait, rien ne va plus...".
In this moment the rosters of the various teams can no longer be changed until the summer, many have hastened to claim, but in reality it is not really so: those who need it can still resort, for almost two months (the deadline is 31 March) to the free market, or those players who for one reason or another have remained without a contract.
We tend to think that this collection of forgotten athletes is just a bunch of old, lazy, out-of-shape players or troublemakers, but the reasons why some valuable players are still without a team may actually be different. Therefore, here is a look at the starting eleven of a team made up only of players without contracts, with the certainty that by March several of them will be able to move on and start a new adventure.
Goalkeeper - Danijel Subasic
Thirty-six years old, vice-world champion with the Croatian national team in 2018, Subasic spent the last eight seasons with Monaco before leaving the Principality and making almost 300 appearances in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. An experienced goalkeeper in acceptable physical form, he could come in handy in the event of a sudden injury to a starter.
Right-back - Danny Simpson
Danny Simpson is a versatile right-back who has just finished with Huddersfield Town in the English second division. With a turbulent past behind him, Simpson could use his experience in a provincial environment, exploiting his still-intact physique and excellent acceleration skills, as well as an age, 34, still compatible with top-level football. He was one of the heroes of Leicester, in the miraculous championship won in 2016 by the team coached by Claudio Ranieri.
Centre-back - Ezequiel Garay
After leaving Valencia last summer, the 1986-born Argentine defender is one of the most sought-after players on the free agent market due to his knowledge of world football (he has played in Argentina, Portugal and Russia as well as Spain) and his goalscoring ability. Over 450 career games and 38 goals are the baggage with which he presents himself to his potential new team, which I am sure will not be long in coming.
Centre-back - Martin Skrtel

A rocky Slovakian defender, born in 1984, Skrtel has recently been released by his former club, Istanbul Başakşehir, with whom he won the Turkish championship in the last season, contributing a great number of appearances and goals.
Very good in marking and in the air game due to his powerful physique, he could be a valid alternative in the roster of most Serie A teams.
Left-back - Fabian Johnson

Born of an American father and a German mother, this quick left-back, who has just turned 33, can be useful to many Italian teams, also thanks to his flexibility, which allows him to cover more advanced roles with ease. He has had many years of experience at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he made over 100 appearances and scored 12 goals in six seasons.
Right winger - Romulo
An old acquaintance of Italian football, where he has been playing for ten seasons now, the Italian-Brazilian born in 1987 has always won the trust of his coaches thanks to his great flexibility (he can play in practically all midfield roles or at right-back) and his professionalism. His experiences in Italy have been with Fiorentina, Genoa, Lazio, Verona, Juventus and Brescia, for an expert player who has also won a Scudetto and two Coppa Italia.
Central midfielder - Carlos Sánchez
Already seen in Italy, at Fiorentina in 2016 under the technical guidance of Paulo Sousa, the 35-year-old Colombian midfielder is the ideal player for those looking for a strong midfielder to be placed in front of the defence, who can also be used as an outside defender in a three-man defence.
He comes from a not-so-happy experience in the Premier League at West Ham and betting on his desire for a second chance could be the perfect idea.
Left winger - Pablo Piatti
Argentinian with Italian passport, he sees in the years spent at Valencia, team with which he scored more than 160 appearances and 23 goals, the highest point of his career. With a slight physique but great acceleration and ability in tight spaces, he has just ended his professional relationship with Toronto FC*, in the Major League Soccer, and is looking for a new team in Europe: he could be a quality player able to make the difference, especially in clubs that have to fight for salvation.
Attacking midfielder - Samir Nasri
Algerian-born Frenchman Samir Nasri has just finished a troubled spell with Anderlecht, a club where he has made no secret of the fact that he didn't feel at home and didn't live up to his own expectations. For the expert attacking midfielder, seen in the Premier League with Arsenal, Manchester City and West Ham, there are rumours of contacts with AC Milan, which would add, after Mandzukic, another valuable element to the team pointing to the Scudetto.

la finestra invernale del calciomercato si è conclusa lunedì 1 febbraio alle ore 20.00, quando le porte dell'Hotel Sheraton di Milano sono state chiuse, come da consuetudine in perfetto orario, dagli addetti. Come era lecito aspettarsi non è stata una sessione caratterizzata da nomi altisonanti, a causa delle esigue finanze a disposizione dei club, che in molte occasioni hanno dovuto ricorrere a prestiti o alla creatività dei loro dirigenti per intavolare trattative imperneate sugli scambi.
Alcuni nomi interesseanti sono comunque entrati a far parte della grande famiglia del calcio italiano, come i centrocampisti Kovalenko e Mæhle, acquistati dall'Atalanta, la giovane interessante punta Zirkzee, in prestito al Parma dal Bayern Monaco (e sul quale si sussurra ci fosse l'interessamento anche della Juventus), o il forte terzino statunitense Bryan Reynolds, che si è fatto notare nella MLS e che ha trovato a Roma, sponda giallorossa, la sua nuova casa.
E se solo il Milan pare essersi rafforzato tra le tre grandi squadre del nord, con l'ingaggio di calciatori di valore come Mario Mandzukic o il giovane anglo-canadese Fikayo Tomori, il record di spesa appartiene alla Juventus, che pur non avendo tesserato l'attaccante che i tifosi chiedevano a gran voce, ha messo a segno una serie di acquisti di giocatori giovani destinati ad essere inseriti momentaneamente nelle formazioni minori, o ad essere lasciati, come nel caso di Rovella, a maturare nelle loro attuali squadre.
La data del 1 febbraio pertanto ha lanciato sul tavolo calcistico italiano il classico avvertimento sentito dai croupier nei casinò di tutto il mondo: "Les jeux sont fait, rien ne va plus..."
In questo momento le rose delle varie squadre non possono più essere modificate fino all'estate, si sono affrettati a sostenere in molti, ma in realtà non è proprio così: chi ne avesse bisogno può infatti ancora ricorrere, per quasi due mesi (il termine ultimo è al 31 marzo) al mercato degli svincolati, ovvero quei giocatori che per un motivo o per un altro sono rimasti senza contratto.
Di solito si tende a pensare che in questo insieme di atleti dimenticati si annidino solo vecchi giocatori svogliati, fuori forma o piantagrane, ma i motivi per cui alcuni calciatori di valore siano ancora senza una squadra possono in realtà essere diversi. Di seguito pertanto vediamo quale sarebbe l'undici titolare della squadra composta solo da giocatori senza contratto, con la certezza che da qui a Marzo diversi tra loro potranno accasarsi e cominciare una nuova avventura.
Portiere - Danijel Subasic
Trentasei anni, vice-campione del mondo con la nazionale croata nel 2018, ha disputato le ultime otto stagioni con il Monaco, prima di svincolarsi dal club del Principato con il quale ha messo a referto quasi trecento presenze tra Ligue 1 e Ligue 2. Portiere di grande esperienza e in accettabile forma fisica, potrebbe tornare utile in caso di improvviso infortunio di qualche titolare.
Terzino destro - Danny Simpson
Terzino abile in entrambe le fasi, ha appena concluso la sua avventura nell'Huddersfield Town, squadra che milita nella seconda serie inglese. Con un passato turbolento alle spalle, Simpson potrebbe mettere a disposizione la sua esperienza in qualche realtà di provincia, sfruttando il suo fisico ancora integro e ottime doti di accelerazione, oltre ad un'età, 34 anni, ancora compatibile con il calcio dei massimi livelli. E' stato uno degli eroi di Leicester, nel miracoloso campionato vinto nel 2016 dalla squadra allenata da Claudio Ranieri.
Difensore centrale - Ezequiel Garay
Terminata l'avventura al Valencia la scorsa estate, il difensore argentino classe 1986 è uno dei pezzi pregiati del mercato degli svincolati, per la sua conoscenza del calcio mondiale (oltre che in Spagna ha giocato anche in Argentina, Portogallo e Russia) e per le sue doti in marcatura. Oltre 450 partite disputate in carriera e 38 goals realizzati sono il bagaglio con il quale si presenta alla sua eventuale nuova squadra, che sono certo non tarderà a manifestarsi.
Difensore centrale - Martin Skrtel
Roccioso difensore slovacco, classe 1984, Skrtel si è da poco svincolato dalla sua ex squadra, l'Istanbul Başakşehir, con la quale si è laureato campione di Turchia nel campionato appena concluso, fornendo un ottimo contributo di presenze e realizzazioni.
Abilissimo in marcatura e nel gioco aereo per via del suo possente fisico, potrebbe rappresentare una valida alternativa nelle rotazioni della maggior parte delle squadre di Serie A.
Terzino sinistro - Fabian Johnson
Di padre americano e madre tedesca, questo rapido terzino sinistro, che ha appena compiuto 33 anni, può tornare utile alla causa di molte squadre italiane, anche in virtù della sua duttilità, che lo porta a ricoprire con naturalezza anche ruoli più avanzati. E' reduce da un esperienza pluriennale al Borussia Mönchengladbach, dove in sei stagioni ha collezionato oltre cento presenze e dodici reti.
Ala destra - Romulo
Vecchia conoscenza del calcio italiano, Paese nel quale gioca ormai da dieci stagioni, l'italo-brasiliano classe 1987 ha sempre conquistato la fiducia dei suoi allenatori in virtù della sua grande duttilità (può ricoprire praticamente tutti i ruoli del centrocamp o giocare da terzino) e della sua professionalità. Fiorentina, Genoa, Lazio, Verona, Juventus e Brescia le sue esperienze italiane, per un giocatore di grande esperienza che vanta nel palmares personale anche la vittoria di uno scudetto e di due Coppa Italia
Centrocampista centrale - Carlos Sánchez
Già visto in Italia, alla Fiorentina nel 2016 sotto la guida tecnica di Paulo Sousa, il centrocampista colombiano trentacinquenne è l'uomo ideale per chi cerca un forte mediano da piazzare davanti alal difesa, da impiegare all'occorrenza anche come difensore esterno in una difesa a tre.
Proviene da un'esperienza non troppo felice in Premier League al West Ham e puntare sulla sua voglia di riscatto potrebbe rappresentare un'idea affatto sbagliata.

Francese di origini algerine, ha appena concluso la sua esperienza tormentata con l'Anderlecht, club nel quale il giocatore non ha mai nascosto di non essersi ambientato, ritenendolo non all'altezza delle porprie aspettative. Per l'esperto trequartista, visto in Premier League con Arsenal, Manchester City e West Ham, si parla in queste ore di contatti ben avviati con il Milan, che aggiungerebbe, dopo Mandzukic, un altro elemento di sicuro valore alla rosa che punta allo scudetto.

Veloce e tecnica punta esterna, classe 1989, ha visto limitare dai numerosi problemi fisici la sua carriera; l'ultimo atto si è svolto in Turchia, al Trabzonspor, dove in pochi mesi è riuscito a mettersi in mostra con sette goals in sedici presenze, ma una brutta vicenda legata ad una fuga di notizie su un trasferimento gli ha provocato una squalifica di quattro mesi. Per chi vorrà scommettere su di lui potrebbero aprirsi scenari favorevoli, soprattutto facendo leva sulla sua voglia di rientro nel calcio che conta.
