After the Coppa Italia, which will tell us this evening who between Napoli and Spezia will go to the semifinals to challenge Atalanta, the Serie A championship is ready to start again with the first day of the second half of the season. Although there are no direct clashes between the first ones of the ranking, the teams fighting for the Scudetto are almost all expected to engagements that should not be taken lightly: Inter will host the unpredictable Benevento of Pippo Inzaghi, Juventus will visit Sampdoria of the old fox Claudio Ranieri, while Roma will receive at the Olimpico a team always feared as the Verona.
The most difficult task of the day, however, will probably fall to the leader Milan, since, on Sunday afternoon, it is expected on the field of Bologna, for the challenge between two coaches who have sat on the bench of the other team in the past. The hosts, in spite of some good performances, come from a period not really favourable, having collected only five points in the last five games (even if, at the Dall'Ara, Bologna has shown to perform much better than on the road), while Milan will have to forget quickly the two last defeats, suffered at the hands of Atalanta in the championship and Inter in the Italian Cup, if they want to continue lulling dreams of glory.
Contrary to what one might imagine, the two teams' past league fixtures in Bologna favour the Milanese side by just a whisker: in the past 72 matches, Milan have won 26 times in the city, compared to 25 for the hosts, who have not won against the Rossoneri for almost 19 years (March 2002). They will also have to break another taboo, as their coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has never won against Milan.
What is certain is that, given the importance that the two cities have covered and still cover in the Italian football scene, the almanacs are full of great deeds and names of unforgettable champions, able to paint the chronicles of the challenge: below we will try to remember, in the usual roundup, the best challenges of the past between Bologna and Milan.
Bologna's most exciting victory
Bologna v AC Milan 4-1 (12 December 1965)
After a shaky start to the championship, in which Bologna collected four defeats in eleven matches, the team from Emilia received at the Dall Ara stadium one of the favourites for the final success, Milan of the Swede Nils Liedholm, who during the previous season had contended for the Scudetto against the Italian champions Inter.
The men of Luis Carniglia, the Argentinean coach who took over from Manlio Scopigno a few weeks ago, understood that the challenge against the Rossoneri could be a sort of watershed between a mediocre season and a leading one, and they immediately attacked their opponents with their fast game.
Shortly after half an hour, the hosts were already ahead 2-0, thanks to goals by Pascutti and Perani, and a few minutes later Milan was forced to remain with ten players due to the serious injury suffered by Bruno Mora (at that time substitutions were not allowed).
The Rossoneri tried again in the second half, but Bologna scored twice more, with Nielsen and the German Helmut Haller, directly from a corner kick. Bologna had an excellent second half of the season, finishing in second place, while Milan started a downward spiral that led them to finish in seventh place.

Five points behind Fiorentina at the end of the first half of the season, Alberto Zaccheroni's Milan visited Bologna on the first day of the second half of the season, with the aim of taking advantage of any slip-up by the teams in front of them.
Bologna, one of the best provincial football clubs in the last few seasons, has just lost Roberto Baggio in the summer, who was transferred to Inter, but in his place they have signed another great bomber, the former Lazio striker Beppe Signori.
It was Signori who put the hosts ahead twice, in the 15th minute and again at the end of the first half, after Guly had scored the momentary draw. In the second half, however, Zaccheroni's men squared up and first equalised thanks to an own goal by Magoni, then won the match with a goal by N'Gotty in the last minute.
This success will give the Rossoneri the strength to embark on a great comeback season, which will lead them to win the championship on the last day, while Bologna will end a decent season in ninth position.
Bologna's biggest victory
Bologna v AC Milan 6-3 (6 January 1935)
Two teams already far from the top of the table faced each other on the eleventh day of Serie A 1934/35. Bologna was the one of the two teams hungrier for points, being only one point above the third-last place and the unscrupulousness of the hosts made the match sparkling since the first minutes: the first half ended with the Emilians leading 3-2, with continuous alternating goals, but in the second half Milan collapsed, got unbalanced and suffered other three goals.
From that moment on, the meneghini would have a disastrous second half of the season that would lead them to finish the championship in tenth place, while for Bologna, capable of recovering and producing a series of positive results, the season would end with the conquest of sixth place.
AC Milan's biggest victory

The first day of the second half of the 2008/09 championship sees at the Dall Ara two teams with opposite moods and objectives; if Milan, in fact, in third position and six points behind the top, is in the fight with Inter and Juventus to win the Scudetto, the red-blue are in the fifth-last place in very dangerous waters as far as the salvation fight is concerned.
In the cold afternoon in Emilia it was the turn of Marco Di Vaio, after ten minutes, to give the hopes of success to the hosts, but the joy was destined to last only a few minutes, because first Seedorf, then Kakà overturned the result, rounded on 1-3 again by the Brazilian star before the interval.
In the second half Bologna tried to reopen the match, but the goal of David Beckham at the quarter of an hour extinguished all the ambitions of the hosts. Milan will finish third in the championship, while the Emilians will get a hard-earned salvation on the last day.

Dopo la parentesi della Coppa Italia, che ci dirà questa sera chi tra Napoli e Spezia approderà alle semifinali per sfidare l'Atalanta, il campionato di Serie A è pronto per ripartire con la prima giornata del girone di ritorno. Sebbene non siano in programma scontri diretti tra le prime della classifica, le squadre che si giocano lo scudetto sono attese quasi tutte da impegni che è bene non prendere sottogamba: l'Inter ospiterà infatti l'imprevedibile Benevento di Pippo Inzaghi, la Juventus farà visita alla Sampdoria della vecchia volpe Claudio Ranieri, mentre la Roma riceverà all'Olimpico una squadra sempre temibile, come il Verona.
Toccherà però con buona probabilità alla capolista Milan l'impegno più difficile della giornata, dal momento che, domenica pomeriggio, è attesa sul campo del Bologna, per la sfida tra due allenatori che si sono seduti in passato sulla panchina dell'altra squadra. I padroni di casa, nonostante alcune buone prestazioni, arrivano da un periodo non proprio favorevole, avendo raccolto solo cinque punti nelle ultime cinque partite (anche se al Dall'Ara il Bologna ha dimostrato di rendere molto meglio che in trasferta), mentre il Milan dovrà dimenticare in fretta le due ultime sconfitte, patite per mano dell'Atalanta in campionato e dell'Inter in Coppa Italia, se vorrà continuare a cullare sogni di gloria.
Contrariamente a quello che si può immaginare, i precedenti di campionato giocati a Bologna tra le due squadre sono favorevoli alla squadra meneghina solo di un soffio: nelle 72 sfide passate, il Milan si è infatti imposto nella città emiliana 26 volte, contro le 25 dei padroni di casa, che tuttavia non fanno propria la sfida con i rossoneri da quasi 19 anni (marzo 2002). Inoltre i felsinei saranno chiamati a sfatare un altro tabù, visto che il loro allenatore Sinisa Mihajlovic non ha mai vinto contro il Milan.
Quel che è certo rimane che, vista l'importanza che le due piazze hanno ricoperto e ricoprono ancora nel panorama calcistico italiano, gli almanacchi sono pieni di grandi gesta e di nomi di campioni indimenticati, capaci di dipingere le cronache della sfida: di seguito proveremo a ricordare, nella consueta carrellata, le migliori sfide del passato tra Bologna e Milan
La più bella vittoria del Bologna
Bologna-Milan 4-1 (12 dicembre 1965)
Dopo un inizio di campionato in chiaroscuro, nel quale il Bologna colleziona ben quattro sconfitte in undici gare, la squadra emiliana riceve allo stadio Dall'Ara una delle favorite per il successo finale, il Milan dello svedese Nils Liedholm, che durante la stagione precedente ha conteso lo scudetto ai campioni d'Italia dell'Inter.
Gli uomini di Luis Carniglia, allenatore argentino subentrato da qualche settimana sulla panchina rossoblu al posto di Manlio Scopigno, comprendono che la sfida ai rossoneri potrebbe rivelarsi una sorta di spartiacque tra una stagione mediocre ed una da protagonisti, ed aggrediscono da subito gli avversari con il loro gioco veloce.
Poco dopo la mezz'ora i padroni di casa sono già in vantaggio per 2-0, grazie alle reti di Pascutti e Perani, e qualche minuto più tardi il Milan è costretto a rimanere in dieci uomini per il grave infortunio occorso a Bruno Mora (all'epoca non erano consentite sostituzioni).
I rossoneri ci provano nella ripresa, ma il Bologna con il minimo sforzo va in rete altre due volte, con Nielsen e con il tedesco Helmut Haller, direttamente da calcio d'angolo. Gli emiliani disputeranno un'ottima seconda parte di stagione, terminando al secondo posto, mentre il Milan da quale momento in poi inizierà una discesa che lo porterà a terminare al settimo posto.
La più bella vittoria del Milan
Bologna-Milan 2-3 (24 gennaio 1999)

Staccato di cinque punti dalla capolista Fiorentina al termine del girone d'andata, il Milan di Alberto Zaccheroni fa visita al Bologna alla prima giornata di ritorno, con l'obiettivo di approfittare di un eventuale passo falso delle squadre che la precedono in classifica.
Il Bologna, una delle migliori realtà del calcio di provincia da ormai qualche stagione, si è appena privata in estate di Roberto Baggio, ceduto all'Inter, ma al suo posto ha ingaggiato un altro grande bomber, l'ex centravanti della Lazio, Beppe Signori.
Proprio Signori porta in vantaggio i padroni di casa due volte, al quindicesimo minuto e nuovamente allo scadere del primo tempo, dopo la rete del momentaneo pareggio di Guly. Nel secondo tempo però gli uomini di Zaccheroni fanno quadrato e dapprima pareggiano grazie ad un'autorete di Magoni, poi conquistano la vittoria con una rete di N'Gotty all'ultimo minuto.
Questo successo darà la forza ai rossoneri per intraprendere un grande girone di ritorno, che li porterà a vincere il campionato all'ultima giornata, mentre il Bologna chiuderà una discreta stagione in nona posizione.
La vittoria più larga del Bologna
Bologna-Milan 6-3 (6 gennaio 1935)
Sono due squadre già molto staccate dalla vetta, quelle che si affrontano all'undicesima giornata della Serie A 1934/35. Il Bologna è quella delle due più affamata di punti, trovandosi solo un punto sopra il terzultimo posto e la spregiudicatezza dei padroni di casa rende la gara spumeggiante fin dai primi minuti: il primo tempo si chiude con gli emiliani in vantaggio per 3-2, con continue alternanze di reti, ma nella ripresa il Milan crolla, finendo per sbilanciarsi e subire altre tre reti.
Da quel momento in poi i meneghini andranno incontro ad una seconda parte di stagione disastrosa che li porterà a concludere il campionato addirittura in decima posizione, mentre per il Bologna, capace di risollevarsi e di inanellare una serie di risultati positivi, la stagione terminerà con la conquista del sesto posto.
La vittoria più larga del Milan
Bologna-Milan 1-4 (25 gennaio 2009)
La prima giornata del girone di ritorno del campionato 2008/09 vede affrontarsi al Dall'Ara due squadre dall'umore e dagli obiettivi opposti; se il Milan infatti, in terza posizione e staccato di sei punti dalla vetta, è in piena lotta con Inter e Juventus per conquistare lo scudetto, i rossoblu si trovano al quintultimo posto in acque molto pericolose per quel che riguarda la lotta salvezza.
Nel freddo pomeriggio emiliano tocca a Marco Di Vaio, dopo una decina di minuti, regalare le speranze di successo ai padroni di casa, ma la gioia è destinata a durare solo pochi minuti, perchè prima Seedorf, poi Kakà ribaltano il risultato, arrotondato sull'1-3 ancora dal fuoriclasse brasiliano prima dell'intervallo.
Nella ripresa il Bologna prova a riaprire la partita, ma la rete di David Beckham al quarto d'ora spegnerà tutte le velleità dei padroni di casa. Il Milan chiuderà terzo in campionato, mentre per gli emiliani arriverà una sudata salvezza all'ultima giornata.
