Of course I am also excited to participate, with this post, in the contest Unforgettable Italy (click here to read more), which gives me the opportunity to take a break from football-themed articles, and to all of us to show the photographic skills we have, showing to those who will read places, characteristics or peculiarities of our wonderful peninsula.
The photo with which I'm entering the contest was taken on a hot July afternoon this summer using the camera on my Huawei P30 light phone. With the uncertainty surrounding the covid-19, booking a holiday outside the national (but actually also regional) borders immediately seemed, for a thousand reasons, an unattractive idea and, in between walks, we said to ourselves:
Why not make a virtue out of necessity and rediscover the beauty of our region by dedicating the summer to many small, almost daily trips instead of one big trip?
And so, on one of these excursions, armed with a cooler and enough food to feed an army, we headed for Varallo, a small town in the north of the province of Vercelli, on the border with that of Verbania. The territory of the municipality is ideally divided into two parts, both spectacular and worth a visit: a higher one, which includes the Sacro Monte di Varallo (the oldest of the Sacred Mountains, erected in the 15th century by Bernardino Caimi) and one at a much lower altitude, crossed by the Sesia river.
Leaving the town centre, you take the national road that leads to a large car park by the side of the street, and from there, if you go down a few metres, with attentive eyes you can see a semi-hidden path that branches off towards some small pebble beaches overlooking the Mastallone stream, a tributary of the Sesia.
In the photo you can see a detail of the clear (and cold) waters of the torrent, perfectly swimmable and which managed to make us forget, for a few hours, the fact that we had skipped the classic seaside holiday for a year. For me, this photo represents not only the memory of a beautiful day, but also the essence of Italy, not only characterised by beautiful beaches, historical monuments and artistic masterpieces, but also by places that are unknown to most people but which are equally able to offer beautiful sensations in contact with nature.

Cari amici di Steemit,
naturalmente anche io sono entusiasta di partecipare, con questo post, al contest Unforgettable Italy (clicca qui per saperne di più), che regala l'occasione a me di prendere una pausa dagli articoli a tema calcistico, e a tutti noi di mostrare le abilità fotografiche di cui disponiamo, mostrando a chi leggerà luoghi, caratterizzazioni o particolarità della nostra meravigliosa penisola.
La foto con la quale intendo partecipare al concorso è stata scattata questa estate, in uno scottante pomeriggio di Luglio, grazie alla fotocamera del mio telefono Huawei P30 light. Con la situazione di incertezza legata al covid-19, prenotare una vacanza al di fuori dei confini nazionali (ma in realtà anche regionali) ci è sembrata da subito, per mille motivi, un'idea poco attraente e, tra una passeggiata e l'altra, ci siamo detti:
Perchè non fare di necessità virtù, e riscoprire le bellezze della nostra regione, dedicando l'estate invece che ad un unico grande viaggio, a tante piccole uscite dalla cadenza pressochè quotidiana?
E così, in una di queste gite, armati di borsa frigo e cibarie da sfamare un esercito, ci siamo diretti a Varallo, piccolo paese posto a nord della provincia di Vercelli, al confine con quella di Verbania. Il territorio del comune è idealmente diviso in due parti, entrambi spettacolari e che meritano una visita: una più alta, che comprende il Sacro Monte di Varallo (il più antico dei Sacri Monti, eretto nel XV secolo da Bernardino Caimi) ed una ad un'altitudine decisamente più bassa, attraversata dal fiume Sesia.
Uscendo leggermente dal centro abitato si imbocca una statale che conduce verso un ampio parcheggio a bordo strada, e da lì, scendendo di qualche metro, con occhi attenti è possibile notare un sentiero-semi nascosto, che si dirama verso alcune spiaggette di sassi affacciate sul torrente Mastallone, affluente della Sesia.
Nella foto potete vedere un particolare delle acque limpide (e fredde) del torrente, perfettamente balneabili e che sono riuscite a farci dimenticare, per qualche ora, il fatto di aver saltato per un anno la classica vacanza marina. Questa foto per me rappresenta, oltre che il ricordo di una bellissima giornata, anche l'essenza dell'Italia, non solo caratterizzata da spiagge bellissime, monumenti storici e capolavori artistici, ma anche da posti sconosciuti ai più ma in grado ugualmente di regalare bellissime sensazioni a contatto con la natura.
