Lesson 12: Introduction to Ibis Paint X Drawing Application: Making a digital drawing from scratch, Part 1 / By @carlaisl

Today I present to you my lesson 12, related to the Ibis Paint X Drawing Application, which I will be using for the lessons and will be the main protagonist of them. You can download it through the following link: Ibis PaintX

To make a digital drawing we can use several ways. There are those who start by making color stains and little by little they obtain the desired shape, there are those who make the sketch digitally and little by little begin to make the drawing, and there are those who make the sketch by hand and then digitize it.

Personally I have done the last two ways, but I consider the last option easier. Drawing by hand can complement digital drawing, and we will see that in this and the following lessons, once we have understood the previous classes where all the tools offered by Ibis Paint X were explained.

When we want to learn to draw digitally, a good recommendation is to do the drawing by hand because we have more mastery of the pulse and it can be easier to make the sketch. That is why in today's class we are going to make a drawing by hand to later digitize it.

One of the last animated films that I liked the most from Disney was "Turning Red". Months ago I drew two of the main characters, Mei Mei and Abby. In today's lesson I decided to continue with the series of drawings, where the protagonist will be Miriam, a girl with a lot of style and a friendly heart.

1. With the graphite pencil we make a circle. It doesn't have to be perfect, let's remember that we will make a sketch.

2. Above the circle we make a line in the middle, and two horizontal lines (to define the position of the eyes).

We will also make two small horizontal lines at the bottom of the vertical line, to locate the nose and lips.

3. We draw the shape of the bottom of the head and neck.

4. Between the two upper horizontal lines we are going to draw two circles that will be the base for the eyes, another circle for the tip of the nose and a half oval for the ear on the right side of the head (at the height of where the would locate the nose).

5. We elaborate the eyes, nose and smile of the character.

The eyes are almond-shaped, each with two circles inside that are the iris and pupil of the eye.

The nose consists of two small lines at the bottom that are the holes, and two curved lines that define the shape of the nose.

The smile has big teeth and braces.

6. We make eyebrows and begin to draw hair. This character has wavy hair and a big fluffy fringe.

7. We continue making the waves of the hair, the two braids on the sides of the head, we draw the part of the neck and the shape of the shirt.

We finished shaping the shirt, we drew the character's hat and the necklace.

We erase the guide lines of the face and voila, we will have our sketch with graphite pencil ready. We can give it some tweaks and improve the shape if we wish.

8. This step is optional, but I really like doing it. It consists of outlining the entire drawing with the pen.

In this way we will have our base drawing ready to digitize in the next lessons.
