After World War 2 ended, britain´s dominance as a central power dwindled notably, which made the sovereignty claims heard more loudly, as the economic ties between both countries weakened and the mutual independence grew.

Since the UN´s creation and up to 1965, argentinian diplomatic efforts were centered in that institution´s environment, and some happenings are worth mentioning:

  • With Juan Domingo Perón as president, the argentinian legislative power approved by uninamity on July 5th 1946 a project to submit the sovereignty discussion to the Security Council of the United Nations, transferring the debate from a bilateral stance to the multilateral environment definitively, meaning that dozens of countries get to gossip on the subject now.
  • In 1948 Great Britain signed the Falklands into the UN as a "non self governing territory".
  • In 1950 the Argentinian National Congress declared the Falklands as argentinian posession.
  • In 1950 also, Great Britain extended the limits of its sovereingty to include the submarine platform, the sea bottom and the subterranean soil adjacent to the isles, increasing its claim to 85000km2 and enlarging its combo like a McDonalds meal.

Several incidents happened during that time, and i´ll recount a few:

  • During 1947 a squad of the Argentinian Navy made maneuvers in waters close to the Falklands, making several landings of equipment and personnel in several islands of the Southern Atlantic. United Kingdom´s frigate HMS Snipe and the cruiser HMS Nigeria went on full alert, but after some frictions, argentine forces withdrew. The english government decided to keep those ships in the area nevertheless.

  • In 1952 Argentina announced plans to retake all the territories that were once theirs, which escalated to a series of minor incidents in "Bahia Esperanza" in the Antartic coast. The british response was to issue the cruiser HMS Superb to the area and grant its commander permission to engage and fire at will.

  • Next year an Argentinian landing happened in Deception Island, belonging to the Southern Shettland Islands. The british sent the HMS Snipe again to force the argentinian retreat.

  • By 1953 the tension in "Bahia Esperanza" ameliorated but soon after the focus of the conflict moved to the Dundee island(not the Crocodile one), where the weakness of the british response was evident but the maneuvers of both countries limited themselves to symbolic actions only. Does that mean that they sent each other to fuck themselves using symbols? (lol, sorry for that joke, that one was really bad)

  • During the same year, Peron sent the Read Admiral Alberto Tesaire to the coronation ceremony of the Queen Elizabeth II to offer the british government to cede control of the islands by a private funds transfer. The Foreign Office declined the proposition because it feared that Prime Minister Winston Churchill would be weakened by the opposition. Also, they didn´t quite know what the argentine government meant by the word "Bitcoin" :P

Well, this was a short one! I´ve accepted the advice from my sensei and started making my articles shorter and more skimmable so I can post more frequently. On the next part of this series, learn about several argentinian landings on the Falklands, and the british reaction. Stay tuned!
