TOTAL TEA ANARCHY!

This is the 4th part of a very interesting story, check out the previous parts to understand what it´s about:
Part 1: https://steemit.com/history/@wolfenlord/a-story-of-two-isles
Part 2: https://steemit.com/history/@wolfenlord/a-story-of-two-isles-part-2
Part 3: https://steemit.com/history/@wolfenlord/a-story-of-two-isles-the-falklands-part-3

This part of the Falklands´ story is dedicated to a bold outlaw, a [gaucho](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaucho), whose face doesn´t appear anywhere, there are no streets to remember him, but despite having lived only 25 years, he made his mark on the isles. His name was Gaucho Rivero, and one day, eight months after the british occupation of the isles in 1833, he lead a rebellion, recovering the isles for a full 4 months. What happened that prompted him to rebel? Remember Matthew Brisbane, the Captain who was captured and realeased in Montevideo with a word of caution by the british never to return to the Falklands? Well, guess what, he returned.(no, he didn´t said "I´ll be back"). He became the helmsman of the Sarandí, Pinedo´s schooner, and he was there just before the british overtook the isles in 1833, but he wasn´t captured that time, instead, he was sent to Buenos Aires.(Probably with a note reading "Do NOT return to sender". But a bit later, and having more love for the isles(and seals) than for the continental land, he made a deal and was then permitted to go back to the Falklands on the condition that he resigned his commision. So he did just that, and returned a bit later that year in the schooner Rapid, during the first visit of the british HMS Beagle, commanded by Captain Fitz Roy, which had Charles Darwin onboard as a guest(yes, the famed naturalist, and no, he wasn´t riding a giant turtle). He became friends with Fitz Roy and then right there, turned into a British collaborator(well his name was british after all, so it wasn´t exactly treason). He agreed by Fitzroy´s command to become a ruler of sorts for the islands and enforce his politics. At that time, it was strictly forbidden to travel from the islands to Buenos Aires for most people, so continental money didn´t flow into them. The island peasants demanded to be paid in metallic coins, like the british captain Onslow promised them just some months before, right after taking the islands, but Brisbane made deaf ears to that promise and chose not to fullfill it. They were instead paid in paper vouchers, which the warehouse manager eventually stopped taking, making having enough food to eat a problem for most island habitants. Furthermore, he instructed foreman Jean Simon to raise the peasants workload so they wouldn´t have time to think about their situation. However, his iron fist rule would be shortlived.

When the peasants realized they were downgraded from quasi slaves to full enslavement, a group of three gauchos(if you didn´t read the wikipedia description, they´re like south america´s cowboys) and five charrua indians, under the leadership of Rivero killed tho whole island leadership by taking them by surprise, including Brisbane. Some say the attacks were carried at night, others say they were carried just after the morning. Everyone agrees that they were swift, they had to be, because the rebels were armed only with knives and two rusty muskets, in contrast with the pistols and rifles that their dictatorial opponents had. Brisbane was not killed at "town hall"(Vernet´s old home functioned as a town hall), but rather in his sleep at his home, he didn´t even have time to reach for his weapon, which he kept inside his room.
Rivero then, in patriotic fury took down the british flag and prohibited the locals to raise it ever again. Then, he improvised an argentinian flag and raised it in the center of the town. The improvised flag must have not been very good because Charles Darwin said on his logs that "An unrecognizable flag was raised after the riots on the isles".

- Guys! I think this flag is not right! Can any of you read and confirm to me what colors our flag has?
- We´re indians bro, we can´t read and your nation didn´t even exist when we arrived here! What did you expect from us?

The rest of the british personel, in fear of being killed in their sleep, ran(or rather swimmed) to another nearby island of the archipelago, where they were rescued some days later by the british whaling ship "Hopeful"(Best name choice ever). Since this was a short post, I think I´ll prepare one more part for this same week, telling how the british retook the isles and what happened up until the Argentine-British war of 1982. Stay tuned!
