QV1 building - Urban Decent Training

cliffface.jpg

On Sunday, April 22nd I will be abseiling down the QV1 building, QV1 is the fourth tallest building in my city of Perth, at 40 storeys high and just over 160 meters (525 feet) its going to be no small feat.

As part of this annual fundraising event, you need to complete a training day to assess your skills and requirements for the day as well as familiarise you with the equipment you will be using on the day.

QV1.jpg
Meet Gabby, she is currently in a wheelchair due to complications with her illness, she will be descending the building with me and is one of the reasons I do what I do.

This event is all-inclusive, I know of four participates completing it in wheelchairs and many that will have skilled instructors descending beside them to take the ropes at times of fatigue.

Why, oh why...

At this stage, you may be asking what on this earth is making me undertake this crazy death-defying act?

Because I can, and...

ostomy.jpg

I am an ostomate, as in I have a stoma and a permanent ostomy bag for life, without it I would be dead and would never be able to attempt such an act. So I do it to:

  • raise awareness about ostomy's,
  • to break the stigma associated with having an ostomy,
  • to give hope to anyone who is still struggling through the stages of finding themselves again after a life-changing event,
  • to raise money for support services for ostomates Also a requirement to do the decent, a min of $750 AUD must be raised for the abseil and $1500 for the zip line to the ground.

I am very passionate about support systems as I felt so alone and depressed in the beginning. I had no one my age to talk with and believe that was part of the reason my acceptance took years. Since starting support groups in March 2016 they have continued to grow and more support is needed, so any help or if you just want to see me scared shirtless then please DONATE HERE.

Somedays all you need is someone who has been there and done that to know that there is going to be a positive tomorrow to look forward too.

Training Day

8am on Sunday just gone, I took my slightly chilly butt with my husband Someone had to film it. in tow off to Stratham's Quarry. We arrived to two training faces one 18 meters (59 feet) the other 24 meters (79 feet). Once we arrive at the top of the cliff face, some of us puffing more than others, we were asked of prior skills and split into two groups.

husband & I.jpg

I going down 160 meters in just two weeks, that's 6.66 times the tallest cliff face, is that an omen...

I went with the steeper and taller option as I have been abseiling before and still enjoy indoor rock climbing on occasion. I had used some of the equipment previously and am a jump in head first kind of person.

extra button.jpg

At 160 meters the ropes will weigh over 16 kgs (35 pounds), making the abseil at the top, less of a sail and more of a push and pull action. From there we will have smooth sailing down to the midpoint where the breaks will be harder to put on to a point where a full stop will be required to add additional resistance to the rope system. We practised the start and stop as well as the additional resistance, which you can see at the start of the clip below as I inch my way down.

Thanks for stopping by the sky's the limit!

DONATE HERE

Everything helps and I am a long way off my required fundraising goal and I would hate to miss the opportunity to zipline from the top of the building, so please click through to the link and donate even a little, today's coffee to help someone through what could be the toughest time in their life or to scare the crap out of me?

Okay. This looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing. I hope you will share some of your other "crazy" activities. Do they have other events besides this one in Perth or other cities?

Im sure they have quite a few. I know they do it with skydiving too, maybe I'll try that after this fear has faded lol. Although in saying that i used to own my own parachute before I became an ostomate so it could be required just to know I can lol.

Wow this looks so dangerous, are you climbing often. have you visited Croatia, We have some nice places for climbers, if you interested i can write article about it.

Not as often as we would like too. The post could be awesome espically if you have some images along with the story I'd love to read it. Make sure you let me know on Discord when its out. No rush just so I dont miss it

I will inform you miss, in next few days i promise to write something. Maybe today if i find some time :)

Love that activity (especially with a high-tech Gri-Gri device). You should try "vertical descent" - running face-down a building. It's a total rush!

BTW, thanks for sharing your "why".

Very courageous, my friend.

Namaste, JaiChai

No but I can next year if I do it again. First year needs to be normal. Baby steps. I think cliff to building will be a big enough one for this leap lol.

The idea of this, looking at tge images from the ground got me all brave and good. The video.... changes all that! WAY to scary for me to watch/ listen to at this point. Will leave that adventure to you! Talk about cortisol injection!!! Had no idea this would be so triggering!! LOL. Oh recovery.

So proud of you @insideoutlet and your brave hubby! For being there to record. Oh man. Just so scary. I've been afraid of heights but thought i'd delt with that issue. Apparently not 🙈 i am fresh out of AUD but can i send SBD or CAD to support your endeavour?

I love how you show up. I feel like eventually i will be able to help ppl in this way too. Just a bit in the thick of it atm.

'to give hope to anyone who is still struggling through the stages of finding themselves again after a life-changing event'

Blessings!! Have an awesome day. 🌹🌸🌹🌸

Oh no, I hope my video didnt give you too much of an attack. I think if you click on the link it would accept CAD, it would be an interesting test, so if you do try it let me know how you go. If not any SBD sent I would convert and donate in AUD.

I feel like eventually i will be able to help ppl in this way too.

You will, don't put any pressure on yourself. Baby steps all the way and only when you think its right. You cant help anyone until you help yourself. Your doing all the right things already x 💜😁💜

I actually scrolled away from the vid quickly! Lol. Then the sound started. So, i went back to stop it but the vid was very close to the end at that point. So nuts! Yes to baby steps! Hard for someone who enjoys full throttle! Which i gather is a commonality between us. 💗

Lol, it sounds like it could be lol. But I have mellowed a lot. Having a second chance at life makes me enjoy it but also not take it for granted. 💜

Yay! Thanks, @anomadsoul, that's awesome news although I thought something was going on when it got above 2$ lol... I appreciate the time to add me to the curation post and for the exposure it brings.

You are crazy!! I would throw up! Oh, pass out and fall off the building :(

Haha there would be no falling only looking really special as you hung from a rope like a dead fish... lol.

Yup, flapping in the wind, so beautiful :)That would be a money maker for Eroded :) lol

haha come to think of it I really should have put it a little more eloquently and said like a beautiful butterfly or true to your name dragon, but that just sounds like I am calling you giant so I am going back to butterfly lol.

LOL No I'll take dragon :) There would be nothing eloquent about it, it would be hysterical though :)

Wow, this is impressive, but I have to say you are nuts! No way I would jump (abseil) off any building!

Haha, it was not on my to do list but the opportunity arose to support the young lady in the photo with me and I didn't want to let her down. Plus I love a bit of adrenalin, let's you know I'm alive.

A good cause, and I guess someone has to do it! I think I'll stick to treating myself to good food too remind myself I'm alive!

Haha, I do love me some good food... could be the safer option but oh well ill throw caution to the wind for now and eat after lol..

Awesome stuff! I love abseiling but I don't think i've ever dropped anything that high! You will want to do it again straight away as soon as you get over the initial 'over the edge' fear :D Followed and eagerly await the building abseil video :D

Im going to take the go pro with me strapped to the helmet so it should be good. I promise to try not to scream. Lol.

Wow! Kudos to you for your courage! In my late 20s I developed a fear of heights. I am thinking that even before that happened I would not have had your remarkable courage!

Haha, yes heights can be quite scary. I prefer skydiving to this as the height just seems more scary when you see the ground lol. Its all worth it.

for a dose of courage you get a huge dose of pleasure and adrenaline
Thats good exchange :)

That it is! I love a good bit of adrenaline but as I get older its harder to find the courage lol.
