DECENT versus Steem

Finding what you like

Steemit is great but is 7 days enough to earn money? I for one keep finding hidden gems by using AskSteem, Steemit itself or going directly to users I follow looking for interesting stuff and what they have resteemed. I don't like the home or new drawers. No I like to search and discover myself and if I can't find anything I'll got to hot and trending.

You can only follow so many users at a time. And unless you get to know them personally outside of Steemit you won't experience such bonding.

How do you value a post

There's no AI or bot I know off which could at least point me to nicely formatted posts. But I know there are trails; curated places for various subjects. There are more of those: OCD I just met recently and build-a-whale I know from the #BeyonBitcoin Whaletank.

So how do you value a post? What if you could see how much time went into creating it? Medium and some others will tell you how long it will take to read an article, which is handy. But nobody measures how long it took. This could be done of course right here in Steemit. When you write a new post the drafts are automatically saved. Monitoring your progress while writing a post could reveal a great deal. I'd much rather read a post which has seen some love in the making.

Good work takes time

I sometimes re-post articles from others like Jon Rappoport or the Visual Capitalist. This is usually fast, you just reformat and provide the source. If you want to be accurate you might want to include additional viewpoints.

Researching takes time, you might want to quote your sources and list them in a separate section. Wikipedia articles are an example. But who would Wikipedia look like if they had just 7 days to earn money from any new content?

Dtube for video

Each blocks contains all the operations done by Steemians in the previous 3 seconds, in text form only, no image or video, only the links to those are stored.
source

Luckily some Steemians are very inventive and if their work is deemed worthy they receive lots of support. Dtube has seen tremendous growth and I wonder what will happen to other projects like Peerity, LBRY and DECENT.

If you spend a lot of time to create your content and somebody copies it to earn money then they will get a visit my @Cheetah or @SteemCleaners. But as far as I know not for videoor music at the moment!

DECENT will change that when they build their digital fingerprinting service. Even Google has one. It will be a boon to many when they can safely assume their work is not being stolen and monetized.

Is Steem enough?

Sooner or later cryptocurrency enthusiasts should logically end up on decentralized social network and Steem will be there to welcome them, in fact, 325+ thousands of accounts have already been created and we are welcoming many more thousands everyday.

Steem is a great platform. No doubt about it. But I already see cracks:

  • Good people are hard to track and I miss good posts regularly
  • Steemit has no concept of friends and thus also no friends newsfeed
  • There are no circles or hobby related circles, you can just use tags
  • Tags have little rules, there are synonyms and some people abuse them
  • There are no sub-Reddits, no information hierarchy
  • You have 7 days to monetize all of your content
  • Music, video are not tracked for plagiarism
  • If a fan would re-post your video you'll earn nothing

DECENT

A nice video presentation from @dmae

In a nutshell

DecentInANutshell.png

How it is used

Where does it fit in?

Decent Core

DECENT Deamon (1).png

The IPFS layer is responsible for the distribution of content uploads/ downloads between seeders and users. As a bonus, we’ve extended the IPFS system and added a mechanism that rewards seeders

Decent Ecosystem

DECENT Core.png

The second layer is the DECENT Ecosystem. Basically, this layer includes all the interfaces which can be built on top of DECENT Core. It allows for, video streaming, audio streaming, digital content distribution, crowd funding, advertising, reputation management, miner voting, data management, and really the limit of the use-cases has yet to be discovered. It is open source, so anyone can create a new interface, tailor it to a specific use and connect it to the DECENT Core. From another perspective, you could imagine this as a translator between the user who will be enjoying the interface of choice and the complex technology making it all possible.

As you can see, DECENT is much more than just a content distribution platform. Instead it is an entire, customizable infrastructure for developers to use as the foundation for their blockchain projects.

ICO

After the successful launch of DECENT Network on June 30th, we would like to offer a summary of the first week of its life.

DCT distribution to the ICO participants started on July 2nd. Each account is handled manually to ensure all the data are correct before the transaction is confirmed and timestamped in the blockchain. By now, ICO participants who went through the ICO Reclaim and logged in to DECENT GO have their balances transferred. To be exact, more than 1700 accounts were handled and more than 27M DCT distributed.

3rd parties

ATMChain

DECENT Network is pleased to announce ATMChain, a new 3rd party application, is being developed on top of the DECENT Protocol.

Utilizing the underlying blockchain technology allows ATMChain to provide services like smart contracts, smart contract triggers, automatic dividend transfers, data onchains, data queries, etc.

PUBLIQ

PUBLIQ is a free of charge application for sharing digital content (specifically news and articles) built on top of DECENT Network by an independent development team. The rewards distributed in PUBLIQ are based on the reputation of the authors. Reputation is built exclusively from the views and feedback of its readers.

PUBLIQ’s instant rewarding process encourages and incentivizes authors to share their talents with the world. Rewards are assigned on a daily basis to authors depending on their PUBLIQ Score, i.e. a reputation-scoring system created entirely from the readers’ views and feedback. This unique evaluation system will allow authors to be more fairly rewarded, as well as praised or celebrated for their good work.

DECENT TEAM

At any rate, the gathered bitcoins end up in 2-of-3 escrow with Coinbase. The three people responsible for handling the funds are:

  • Matej Michalko, the founder and director of Decent. Also, a co-founder of five different Bitcoin conferences (I suppose that is a new, fancy term for "organizer" nowadays), and a co-founder of two other crypto-related companies
  • Tibor Tarabek, reported to be the "Founder of Microsoft Slovakia", although his LinkedIn profile lists him only as a General Manager in years 1995-2000 (and also a "General Manager" of some "bitcoin, s.r.o." company between years 1992-1994, 16 years before Bitcoin was released!)
  • Vasylchenko Alexander, former director of Mycelium in years 2012-2014 No mention on the website.

Steem and DECENT have in common

  • DECENT is based on Peerplays which should be similar to Steemit

  • reputation building

Fair - everyone starts at the same level and build up their reputation

Let's hope DECENT will have a better distribution than Steem

  • bloggers

  • consumers who decide content which is good or bad

DECENT criticism and praise

criticism

  • You won't earn money through curation! Authors can just set a price of their content.
  • No powering down, this means if your funds are stolen they are really gone whereas you can't really power down fast in Steem
  • On their website they still state that they use a modified bittorrent protocol but now it supposed to be IPFS. source
  • Reputational layer, users earn likes but not clear if upvotes cost money or can earn you money and how it relates to the reward pool
  • Decent talks about censorshiplessnes but are working with Chinese media comanies

Nobody will want to switch over to a new platform, use a new currency to get a glorified paywall.

Exactly my initial critism also. If you want to attract new users who is going to buy their product if they are unknown? If they are already popular on other platforms you should be extra sure you'll protect their content. As far as I know DECENT's digital fingerprinting service is still in the making.

The tokens have little to no value during the presale - you can't trade them for speculation, you will only be able to use them once the platform launches, and there doesn't appear to be any special use for the tokens in the final system other than paying for things.

No online help

I looked at their blog but it is not clear where they offer online help and how to interact with the team. You can comment using Disqus and pretty glaring was this comment:

AS2 months ago

These guys can't design an ICO, can't put together a half decent Help document and they will manage the 'digital revolution'?! They will manually transfer/check coin balances? This coin is going to trade at 1 satoshi.

Praise

  • Enjoy online self-publishing

  • Keep full control over the content

  • Decide the price of your content

  • Secure content with with strong cryptography

  • Avoid 3rd party publishing fees

  • Earn more, while customers pay less

  • Mining seems to be more fair:

Mining will be available after the launch of DECENT Network. In order to give everyone an equal chance to join DECENT Network, the mining rewards will start when the 100,000th block is mined. Afterwards, the mining rewards begin with 0.37 DCT per block and end with 0.04625DCT per block in 20 years.

Use cases

I'm an aspiring musician and I don't have a lot of followers

Can't set a price since I'm unknown. Who will curate me?

I'm a well known musician

Why should I use DECENT? I can afford to earn just 70% while iTunes gets 30% because it's well know. But I can set my own price and I'll earn more.

I'm Jerry Banfield and YouTube just demonetized me

Will my followers pay for each video? People might not want to pay if they do not know what is in it. I can be on Steem and earn a lot of money by posting my videos on Dtube.

I make films for a living.

Worldwide availability, self-publishing freedom, no censorship, full control over the price, lifetime reputation, only authorized access to my content.

I'm a well known tutor for Coursera

People know my work on Coursera and thus are ready to pay less on DECENT

I'm a famous blogger

I can be on Steem and earn a lot of money pretty fast

I'm the famous blogger Mike Adams but Google censored me

I don't need to go on Steemit to make money but it can't hurt to earn money even this way and I can analyze what people actually like by seeing money coming in.

I'm not very famous and I can only write

Steemit is your friend but expect to work your way up.

I'm an E-book Writer

Your content is protected by strong crypto. Digital fingerprinting will make sure nobody republishes your work.
