Our first Bounty from the Garden!

in #garden6 years ago

We harvested the first of our fresh vegetables from the garden this week. It's always so great to be able to grow our own fresh and healthy food. We know exactly what goes in it and what it's really made of and grown with.

This is only a small portion of our tomatoes. We planted almost 40 tomato plants since we have a great deal of space in the garden so we went a little crazy. It was also a great chance to experiment with some different varieties.

My wife tried this blackish/purple variety. It's quite interesting curious to see the insides and how it tastes as well as how it works and colours some recipes.

We also grew some nice hefty ones with a bit of size and there are quite a few more of these that will need to be picked in the next couple days.

We're going to be spending quite a bit of time, canning and making sauces for the winter. Looking forward to it.

We also got a great harvest of beans, although I think they may have stayed on the vine a little bit too long. Not sure what they are going to be like for fresh eating but otherwise they will still be just fine in our chili's and sauces.

Looking forward to the next round of the harvest

PS if you have any great tomato recipes please go ahead and link them in the comments.

I just want to bite into one!
Today i was collecting a bounty of free black berries; free food tastes do much better than not free food.

I'll bring the bacon and lettuce! haha

  • That's a great start to a bountiful harvest. Congrats!

I think the world would be a happier place if everyone got to eat garden fresh tomatoes!!!

Harvests are usually pretty satisfying. And you need all those tomato plants if your kids are anything like mine. We didn't get much of a harvest from our tomato forest and couldn't work out why. There was no evidence of bug devastation and while the chicks we had at the time could fit through the chicken wire they couldn't reach up too high and usually just packed at any low or fallen fruit and scratched up bugs and worms and things. The adult chicken would occasionally break in but not regularly enough to cause the tomatoes we could see growing to just vanish without a trace.

Eventually we discovered the culprit when spotting my eldest son walking around the house playing one of his roleplaying games, on the way past the vege patch he reached a scrawny arm through the chicken wire, snaffled a tomato and walked off eating it like an apple.

Enjoy your colourful tomatoes :D

That's a fine variety of tomatoes - a little bit of every size and shape! My Grandma always used to make jars and jars of Tomato Chutney - but I have no idea how she did it!
