Playing the Sims: Running a Diner

Josette, and Miles Steem are my Sim Girl legacy challenge Sims. If you are not familiar with the challenge you can find it at Sims Legacy Challenge. This challenge is to basically, start your Sim out on a huge lot; with little to no money, and then play the household for 10 generations on this land. There are many stipulations, and rules for the challenge. You can find these rules by following the link.

Jackie is one of the last two Steem daughters to leave the Steem residence. Saturday night, Angelica called Jackie, and asked if she wanted to hang out at the ruins.

I had never gone to the ruins for a party at night, so Jackie accepted the invite. When I got there, it was cool to see the ruins lit up and ready for a party. The dance party was complete with a dance floor, DJ, and a bon fire.

It was nice that Carolyn Steem also showed up to the dance party, to hang out with her siblings.

The dance floor was a patch of smoke on the ground. Jackie introduced herself to the DJ while the others began to gather on the dance floor.

I haven’t attempted to build the DJ skill since I installed the Get Together game pack, so I would like to try it out with either Jackie, or Franny, since they will be remaining at home. Maybe if the diner makes a good profit, I can add an addition with a dance floor, and DJ booth.

Once the bonfire was lit, I had the option to change the fire color to purple, and Jackie had the dance option to do a fire dance. The only downfall to hanging out at the ruins was, there is nowhere to eat.

I had hoped that once I lit the bonfire, I could cook something, but not even a marshmallow option. I had to cut the dance party short because Jackie was getting hungry, and tired.

Back at the restaurant. Miles has begun his first full day at the diner. One of the first things I wanted to do, was to train the staff. You can select each of the employees, using the owner of the restaurant, and then select manage. There you will find he option to send the employee to train.

You will need to be sure your Sim has the funds to pay for the training. Each time you send an employee to train, the training will increase in price, and the employee will gain skills. The employee must complete the brief training, before they can be sent for further training.

When the customers begin to arrive, the owner can then interact with the guests. The stars above their heads will show their satisfaction with the service.

If the owner welcomes the guests, their stars turn from red to yellow. You can have you Sim welcome their guests by selecting the guest Sim, and then select manage. You can then choose the welcome option. After the guests are seated, you can go back to the table, and ask how they are doing.

While the employees are in the restaurant, you can then manage them, or give feedback of their performance. You have the options to request certain actions, such as request cooking speed. You can check up on them, criticize them, demote, fire, and promote, or simply praise.

The more you praise the employees, the harder they will work for your Sim, and the less likely they will complain about their measly pay.

By watching the business menu, you can time how long the restaurant is open. You can work your employees for 8 hours before they begin to show signs of fatigue. If you work them longer than 8 hours, they will begin to complain, it will take longer to get their work done, and you will be paying them while they grumble.

To avoid this, you can stop the flow of customers a few hours before the closing, by clicking on the host station. When you select the host station, you will be given the option to disallow new customers. You can then finish serving the current guests, and new guests will be turned away.

You will have the option to give your Sim’s guests special treatment. Once they receive their food, you can select one of the guests at the table. You will be given the options to check on the table, comp the food, give the table free dessert, or free drinks.

The more attention your Sim gives to their guests, the better the service, and the better the review for the restaurant.

Occasionally, a critic will arrive at the restaurant to review the food, and the service. To get a good review, you will need to give these critics the red-carpet treatment. At the end of the meal, the critic will give their review, and your restaurant will be awarded extra stars, depending on their experience there.

Unfortunately, Miles’ waitress took off from work while he was serving the critic. That’s what he gets for hiring family.

By going into the business menu, you can select the restaurant perks menu. If you have enough perk points collected, you can redeem them to purchase the additional waiter #1 for 350 points.

Once this is purchased, you can then go back to the manage employee menu to hire an additional waitress, who will shortly arrive to work their shift.

After Miles’ new waitress arrived, he could then finish the service to the critic. You can not run the restaurant with your Sim, meaning, they cannot do the work themselves. They must have a host, waitress, and cook at the restaurant always, to run the business.

Carolyn did come back to work, although dressed in her club clothes!

Miles Diner was given a 3-star review. Not bad for the first day in business. It wasn’t the best meal they had ever eaten, but it wasn’t the worst either!

By looking at the stars, you can see which areas, your Sim’s restaurant needs to work. The personal touch here is excellent. Miles welcomed the critic, checked on the table, prioritized the food, and then comped the meal.

The growth opportunities are the meal quality, and the service, which will improve with training.

When you finally close your restaurant, you will be given an update of the day. This will show the star rating, the number of reviews, the shift count, the hours open, and the financial report.

I hope you have learned a little more about how to play the Sims 4, and how to run a new restaurant in the Dine Out game pack. The basic needs that your Sim must meet while at the restaurant, will need to be added, or else they will have to go back home to meet their needs. Eventually I will add additional features such as a television, and a stove, so Miles can cook himself a meal, and then take food home for his family.
