Aloy is back and explores a brand new area in this first and only extension. In addition, she meets new and famous enemies while continuing the battle against mechanical evil. The Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds review gives you an insight into what this DLC has to offer.

Earlier this year, Guerilla Games often surprised PlayStation gamer with a brand new role-playing game: Horizon Zero Dawn. The title presents a world in which humans live in a primitive way, while the landscapes are filled with ancient ruins and mysterious robot dinosaurians.

The main role in this exciting story is for Aloy; an outcast of the Nora tribe, which gradually emerges from the origin of the mechanical beasts and its makers. Now, half a year later, the game receives its first and only expansion, entitled The Frozen Wilds, at a price of 20 euros. This Horizon Zero Dawn DLC expands Aloy's adventure and also offers new weapons and skills to wrestle with.

Meet the Banuk

In this new chapter, you travel to an area that has previously remained unknown. Beyond the mountains in the north lies the snowy habitat of The Cut of the Banuk tribe; a people that can best be compared to Eskimos. While the rest of the world in Horizon Zero Dawn has his hands full of the Eclipse battle, the Banuk desperately fights against the so-called 'Demon' and his own army of mutated robot dino's.

The story of The Frozen Wilds is almost entirely separate from the main plot and can therefore be started at any time. So you do not have to be a seasoned player who has already completed the basic game, although it is advised to have a somewhat higher level before you start with Horizon Zero Dawn DLC.

This because the beasts that you get trapped in the many battles all have a fairly high level and are therefore quite difficult for beginners. A large part of the enemies make their league, but The Frozen Wilds DLC also adds some new monsters to the game. This way you get the chance to fight against the Scorcher, a giant hyena-like beast that spits your way in all sorts of glowing hot flames.

Get it on the stick with King Kong

A worthy opponent, even though the Frost and Fireclaw remain the toughest new opponents who have the opportunity to expand. As a kind of mechanical King Kong, these monsters come down on you and try to make you sick. These enemies do not just get you a cup smaller and do not bother for the Thunderjaws from the original .

Fortunately, Aloy is not in this adventure with empty hands and the heroine has new weapons in her arsenal. For example, the flame-razor and ice-cream spear are now part of her weapon grid and can also buy strong variants of existing weapons in the new area. In addition, a new row of skills has been added to the skill tree , though not as demented as most existing skills.

This way, in the DLC, you will be able to pick up objects from your driver or to unleash mechanical allies with found raw materials. It is not very exciting at all and at this point there was a little more resident. Fortunately, the base of the original already has enough material to wrestle, so you will not mourn over this new trip.

Fun and full of action

For the six to seven hours you need to bring the story of the DLC to a good end, you'll find plenty of beautiful cutscenes, convincing storytelling and solid action segments. Battles are well interchanged with platform elements and puzzles, as well as introducing some new elements on that last front. In addition, the story of The Frozen Wilds is beautiful in the plot of the base game, with the new expansionary information further explaining the big picture.

However, it must be said that the story as an isolated part of the game will have a slightly less impact than when someone catches the DLC while crossing the main story. The satisfaction you get at the end of the normal game lacks in this DLC a bit. Perhaps because you did not get to know the Banuk tribe and its constituents in those few hours.

The emotional bond is missing and as a result, events in The Frozen Wilds come in less. It is one of the small criticisms that are attached to enlargement. For example, exploring the area on the back of your mechanical friend is also a lot more awkward by the many snow and little rocks that are scattered everywhere and the snowstorms may be too intense, which literally does not seem to be handy.

Conclusion

These are little things that fortunately do not ruin the overall experience. Horizon Zero Dawn The Frozen Wilds looks and plays from the first minute, but knows enough new features to keep the short new adventure exciting. The new beasts are spicy to fight and all have their own twists.

Only the plot is a bit compared to the main story, partly because you reach the end after about seven o'clock. Although the DLC can not tamper with the original game, The Frozen Wilds is an extension that is definitely worth the effort to play for both game fans and players who just enter. All it takes is to be able to fight against a mechanical King Kong.
